This book has helped me find a way to a cure for my cancer

I learned about Dean's book last year and was so inspired, as a Lymphoma patient whom is only 36 years old with 4 small children, I had very little hope left. After reading the book it gave me the courage and hope to try and alternative the traditional medical treatment I had been receiving over the last five years, that proved to be ineffective. Basically my doctors told me to that all they could do was PROLONG my life, however there was no CURE. Needless to say I was devastated, as my youngest baby is only two. I took the chance in seeting up an appointment with Dean Kraft, and have seen have every month for the last 7 months. My tumors are shrinking!!! My last Cat Scan looked great, and my doctors are baffeled!!!. I am currently under no other treatments, other than Dean's hands on healing. I take his book to bed with me every night and read a chapter as even though I have read it several times, it is my inspiration and continues to give me the hope and courage to fight this awful disease. Dean and Rochelle Kraft are true Angels from above, and I beleive anyone who suffers from a fatal disease MUST read this book, it will change the way you think about the power of beleiving, as it will also change your life. God Bless all, and Thank the dear Lord for Dean Kraft.

Possibilities for Humanity

All these reviews are curious. Most comment on Dean's healing practice, and not on the book. Why does amazon allow this?

The negative reviews mostly lambaste Dean for not helping them. But do such people have any idea of how overwhelming it must be to have thousands of people begging for help? I know a healer, and she has to work hard at not being totally drained by people and their needs. Jesus had the same problem. Dean may be gifted, but he's only human.

As for the outrage over what Dean charges (purportedly $750 a session), this is peanuts as compared to what a hospital stay might cost...or death. I'd gladly sell my house to be healed from a painful, debilitating illness. And in a day and age when TV stars and sports figures receive tens of millions, $750 seems even more like peanuts for the gift of healing.

For those who Dean couldn't help, (he admits to not being able to help heal everybody), I wonder how anger impedes such a process? Many of reviews are so filled with anger! I cannot imagine anything more destructive to health.

Reviewers denounce Dean for working only two weekends a month. If true, so what? Perhaps that's all he can do at this point in his life (his book repeatedly states how draining healing can be for the healer). After twenty-five-years of helping others, I suspect that Dean needs the down time. Better he be available four days than no days.

In the wonderful movie RESURRECTION (with Ellen Burstyn, 1980), Burstyn portrays a healer who flees from humanity in order to protect herself. She still does healings, but totally anonymously. People have no idea of who she is, or of her gifts. All they know is that they've been mysteriously healed. I can appreciate such a struggle, and wonder if Dean will grow to feel the same way.

Anyway, back to the book. I recommend it for several reasons, but perhaps most because I like the IDEA that hand-on-healing is possible. In a world increasing gone mad, this book offers wondrous possibilities for humanity.

Remarkable , a real genius. someone you want to meet

Dean Kraft is a one of a kind healer. He is truly gifted. This book is a must read for those who are unable to fathom the gift this healer has. His search for truth and his own unanswered questions about how his magnetic power in his hands and body came about is fasciating. Follow with him his road of discovery and doubts, but mainly follow his long ihistory of healing the unhealble. Dean Kraft does not use any religious schools to bring about his energy. It's based on touch, and touch alone. A Touch of Hope is exactly that, he brings hope to the hopeless and cures 80% of those he touches He welcomes scientific experiments and doubting Thomas's. The books screams out to you to want to meet him and talk to him, let alone send anyone you might know who is suffering to him for help. Never before have I read a more compelling and heartwarming account of love and giving by one human being. Mr. Kraft has spent more than half his life in the service of healing others, many times at risk to himself. Through reading his book, I had occasion to meet with Dean and Rochelle Kraft. They are devoted not only to one another but to healing and finding answers so that others might be able to heal. Mr. Kraft is sure that there are others out there who do have his ability and don't know it. Throuth this book, I've seen some of his patience, and saw firsthand their recovery. One an ALS patient that was given a death sentence upon diagnosis. My husband. We now know he will not die, of ALS. Even non belivers will walk away from his book, questioning their own disbelief.

Definitive Introduction of Brownian Motion and Markov Processes

The authors have compiled an excellent text which introduces the reader to the fundamental theory of Brownian motion from the point of view of modern martingale and Markov process theory. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to acquire and in-depth understanding of Brownian motion and stochastic calculus.

The book is fairly self-contained, although the reader should prepare herself with some prerequisite material. Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis and Norris' Markov Chains provide a good basis. You'll also need a solid understanding of the basic properties of Laplace transforms as is covered in an undergraduate course on differential equations (e.g. Schiff's The Laplace Transform: Theory and Applications).

Rogers and Williams begin Chapter 1 of the 2nd edition of their first volume 'Foundations' by exploring Brownian motion from several different modern viewpoints. This is intended to help the reader develop an intuition about Brownian motion and related diffusions. They then move on to explore the well-known features of Brownian motion, including the strong Markov property, the Reflection principle, the Blumenthal Zero-One Law and the Law of the Iterated Logarithm.

The section on Brownian motion in higher dimensions is very nice and I enjoyed the applications of Brownian motion to complex analysis. I particularly liked the Ito's Rule-style proof of the Maximum Modulus Principle.
The authors close out Chapter 1 with detailed introductions of Gaussian and Levy Processes.

In the chapter on Brownian motion, the authors make several forward references to Chapter 2, which covers the prerequisite material from measure theory, probability theory, and stochastic processes needed for both volume I and II. If you found these forward references a bit unsettling, it is quite reasonable to first read Chapter 2 (sections 1-5), then read Chapter 1, and then finish up with canonical Brownian motion section at the end of Chapter 2.

Chapter 3 is a wonderful treatment of Markov processes and requires that the reader have an appreciation of the classical theory of Markov chains. In the first section of Chapter 3, the basic theory of operator semigroups is covered and the authors prove the famous Hille-Yosida Theorem.

The next section covers the 'base case' of operator semigroups. Rogers and Williams refer to these as Feller-Dynkin semigroups. (Ethier and Kurtz simply call these Feller semigroups in their book Markov Processes: Characterization and Convergence.) Each Feller-Dynkin semigroup is shown to be realized by strong Markov process. The highlight of the next section is the Feynmac-Kac formulas. These are presented from the Markov process point of view (computing generators of transformed Markov processes), not from the usual PDEs point of view. Since the authors don't have Ito's Rule available in this first volume, they establish Feynman-Kac using the theory of additive functionals.

The final sections of the book deal with Markov processes with values in a countable state space. Ray processes and the Martin boundary are introduced, however as I began read this material, I felt that the authors believed that I already knew why Ray Theory is so important. I felt this last material would have been a bit better motivated with more of a tie-in to the theory of harmonic functions and the Dirichlet problem. However, the proof of Ray's Theorem is very elegant and really solidifies the reader's understanding of the Hille-Yosida Theorem.

Several of the sections wrap up with a small set of exercises. There are also exercises sprinkled throughout the text (several of which the authors plead with you to work through). The exercises have been thoughtfully selected and reinforce the material.

A Great Book

This book and its companion volume are a well organized and relatively easy-to-read introduction to a wide variety of ideas in stochastic processes. It is not only a great reference (I always keep it on my desk) but it also has a solid expositional style that fully motivates concepts as they are introduced. The Ito Calculus volume goes deeper than a number of other books on topic including information on integration wrt to a general semimartingale instead of just BM and even an introduction to stochastic calculus on manifolds. My only complaints about the book are that it is separated into two volumes which can be kind of a pain and that its coverage of the SDE/PDE relationship is weak. I would recommend reading Karatzas&Shreeve in addition to this book to fill in some the SDE/PDE details and to get another point of view on the somewhat difficult topic of stochastic analysis

A Beautiful Survey of Markov Processes

This book, the first in a two volume set, is a wonderful survey of some of the most important results in modern mathematics. The books begin with Brownian motion, review results from measure theory, and proceed all the way up to the general theory of Markov processes. As a researcher in econometrics and finance, I have found these books incredibly useful.

Several things really set these books apart. First, the authors do a great job motivating the subject matter, giving the reader a sense of why technical topics are important. Although mathematical purists may quibble with this, it gives readers with backgrounds outside of pure mathematics a really useful perspective, and makes the progression of topics flow smoothly throughout the two volumes. Second, these books actually manage to provide motivation and intuition without sacrificing rigor, which is truly an amazing accomplishment. Finally, the price is outstanding--I would challenge anyone to find a text in this area that covers half as much ground for less than twice the price of R&W's books!

While on a similar technical level to Karatzas and Shreve, these books offer much more breadth and intuition at the cost of a few technical details and little treatment of PDEs (this is really my only complaint). Both are indispensible references, but Rogers and Williams is one of the finest mathematical texts I have encountered.

About the Author

Born Eddy Bellegueule in Hallencourt, France, in 1992, Édouard Louis is a novelist and the editor of a scholarly work on the social scientist Pierre Bourdieu. He is the coauthor, with the philosopher Geoffroy de Lagasnerie, of “Manifesto for an Intellectual and Political Counteroffensive,” published in English by the Los Angeles Review of Books.

Michael Lucey is a professor of French literature at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of Never Say I: Sexuality and the First Person in Colette, Gide, and Proust and The Misfit of the Family: Balzac and the Social Forms of Sexuality, and has translated Returning to Reims by Didier Eribon.

As emotionally charged as it is politically relevant

Through Eddy Bellegueule's desperate attempts, and eventual failure, to be the kind of tough guy that his family, classmates, and neighbors expect him to be, Edouard Louis provides a novel interpretation of failure as a means of salvation from violence, poverty and self-destruction. This autobiographical novel is chillingly prescient in the way it exposes the deep-seated racism, misogyny and homophobia that have become cultural cornerstones in poor communities which have found themselves economically and politically isolated in recent decades. And yet, through his extraordinary compassion, Louis is able to reveal how the people of his youth, even those who tormented him most, were themselves trapped by a cycle of violence imposed on them by the world outside their small village.

Clever Premise

Let me start of this by saying flat out, I enjoyed this book. Being the English major snob that I am, I have some issues with some of the stylistic choices made in the writing, but before I get into that I am going to admit that, despite it my quibbles, I'm giving this book four stars because when I got done with the last page I turned off my Kindle thinking, "That was fun - I want to read a sequel."
So, let's get through my gripes so I can tell you why I rate this book so high. The cover. NPCs could use a new cover. Right now it screams homemade. It isn't nearly as awful as some of the hand drawn pseudo anime covers I've seen, but it lacks the style and polish one would expect from a professional piece. I almost didn't bother reading it because of the cover - it was the title and the interesting blurb that got me to change my mind. You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but a lot of people do and your sales will reflect it.
As for the actual writing, there are certain things that stand out, marking this as a book that hasn't gone through the usual gatekeepers. Head popping is one of them. I admit, I have trouble with this in my own writing, so I empathize. When you have a bunch of characters you like, it's hard not to jump around from head to head letting the reader know what is going on from each one's perspective. That's why folks like me have chapters broken up into several scenes so that they can switch around as needed. Jumping from person to person in the space of a paragraph is just too much. I didn't get confused, but it was jarring enough that I noticed it and it interfered with the flow of the story.
Some of the dialogue and prose was overly clunky. I'm a huge fan of Joe Abercrombie, Joe R. Lansdale and Steven Erikson, so natural, flowing dialogue appeals to me a great deal. Mr. Hayes could work on this more. It did improve as I moved further into the book, so it may be a matter of the writer getting a better feel for his characters. He also needs to keep an eye on his dialogue prompts. He had several instances of the no-no of adverbs attached to dialogue. By this I mean things like, "he said, sarcastically". Your dialogue is supposed to be clear enough, and the body language plain enough that the sarcasm is evident.
By now you're wondering why I went with four stars. Let me explain. First of all, the premise is clever and caught my attention. The world is full of adventurers and the common man generally has to deal with the mess they leave behind after they thunder off into the sunset. What happens when a party of adventurers croaks and leaves a group of plain old folks stuck with the onus of carrying on their quest? I love it!
This isn't a case of the farm girl who finds out she's the last of a powerful line of mages who must come to grips with her magic and responsibility to save the world. These are just some generic town folk trying to keep the angry eye of the king off their loved ones. No terrible secrets, no deep premise, no dystopian upper class lording it over the peons.
Next, the characters are nice. And I mean that exactly like it sounds. They're nice people, trying to do what's right. They're friends and they treat each other that way. There's plenty of turmoil, but it's external. Almost every story I read, the characters are forced together out of necessity, or they have terrible secrets that they keep from their friends. The ordinary composition of the characters was a plus in this case.
Another thing I liked about the characters is that Mr. Hayes had obviously worked hard to develop them as unique individuals. As they grew into their roles, their previous lives helped shape who they became - why they became what they did. Eric was probably my favorite character. Just an ordinary guy, working as a guard, he often found himself struggling just to keep his head up. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't cut it as a guard. However, the skills he learned while trying to do his job ultimately lead to his success in his new profession of adventurer.
Finally, this story appealed to the gamer geek in me big time. The story isn't done for laughs, but there are some inside jokes sprinkled throughout the text that RPG gamers will understand and appreciate. There is also a connection to gamers in the "real world", but I don't want to go into that too much because it would spoil an important piece of the plot. Do know that this isn't a story about people from our world getting transported to a fantasy land. If you're looking for that and you don't mind the F-bomb in nearly every sentence, then pick up "Critical Failures" by Robert Bevan. This story is more about how gamers in our world inadvertently cause havoc in the fantasy world.
Overall, I would recommend this book for people who enjoy RPG games, especially of the fantasy genre. You don't have to be a hardcore gamer (ala "Knights of the Dinner Table"), but it would help if you knew enough about it to understand some of the tropes involved. A few of them get stood on their heads in this book (such as the princess-type character that is always in need of rescuing), and you'll miss out if you don't have at least a familiarity with gaming. I don't recommend this book if you're pedantic about beautiful, flowing writing. Read this for the clever ideas and the companionship of real friends.

NPCs are not what you expect from henchmen

As a long time table top player, I really enjoyed NPCs. Drew has captured many facets of game playing from the evil DM killing players with obscure rules to players retaliating by behaving badly. I was expecting NPCs to be similar to Knights of the Dinner Trable especially with the comment 'They are just NPCs, who cares?' but the story takes bizarre twists and turns. I love the NPCs never forget that they started as the low man and use that information to win (or cheat if you are a DM).

I do hope to see more adventurer/henchmen conflict because PCs are notorious for mistreating them (KODT Bag Wars was legendary for this). I am also interested in seeing where the story goes and how the NPCs handle the knowledge they now have.

Simplistic, much too short, and maybe a bit predictable, but with likeable characters, a fun story, and an accurate insight into RPGs. It's done more than anything else towards rekindling my interest in this sort of gaming and the 'standard' fantasy world. For that alone it gets 4 stars.

It is most suitable for those with the most basic knowledge of modern Japanese history, as it opens doors to numerous interesting aspects of the history that may not be covered in 'classic' textbooks. Great Text for an upper-division course
By David Rands
Tipton does an excellent job of writing a compact and yet informative text on Modern Japan. Especially helpful are the many references to scholarship which go into greater detail on specific topics. Not content to bury researchers in the endnotes, Tipton allows the reader easy access to much of the historiography as well as the history. Routledge, as usual, overprices the book, but the quality is outstanding and worth the cost.
