This political science study of the negotiation process applies several perspectives drawn from international relations theories, while also focusing on the implementation of international environmental agreements in a developing country. Moreover, the links between factors at international and domestic levels are examined, with four proposed mechanisms through which an international institution may affect domestic policies. Evidence is found that the CBD has had a beneficial impact on national biodiversity policies in the country studied, but that necessary compatible legislation is absent in developed country parties.

About the Author
JAKE PERRINE began making bloops and bleeps with computers on an Apple II+ when he was 12. He has been an audio engineer for RealNetworks and a mastering engineer at RFI/CD, and has taught professional audio production for over a decade at the Art Institute of Seattle. He has written and directed a rock opera entitled Vamp, releases his own solo electronic music under the name Spire, and is one half of the electropop duo Bloom.

Very, very basic

If you completely have no idea what you are doing with Ableton Live then this could be helpful. However, it just barely scrathes the surface on sound design, mixing, and mastering.

Good, but could have been GREAT!

This book is a great companion to Jake Perrine's other book - "Producing Music with...". It covers some topics more in depth such as mixing automation and using MIDI controllers.
Jake has an easy-to-follow, laid-back writing style that will keep you interested as he moves through various topics.
My only complaint is that this book is being marketed as a more in depth exploration of Ableton Live, and yet 50 or 60 pages are wasted duplications of the exact same basic information given in the Producing Music... guidebook. Bummer dude.
Since this book has 30% less fresh material than the other book, It should cost 30% less IMHO.
That being said, I do not regret buying both books, they are going for bargain prices and there is a good solid foundation to had in Ableton Live by doing the all the exercises in both books.

jakes enthusiasm for music production is immediately evident in his book. It's very well written, and jakes knowledge of ableton is top drawer.The book follows a project that is on the accompanying cd, explaining various techniques in ableton live from keyboard shortcuts to mastering in live. I personally found the sound design and mastering chapters a little bit lightweight in content, as these are such huge areas they could have been covered in a bit more depth. If your hoping to learn to design your own patches with operator or any other built in synths this wont be covered. Having said that there is comprehensive coverage of using racks, processing, midi and controllers, and mixing and automation to name a few. Overall i thought the book was excellent value for money and I would recommend the book for anyone looking to improve their skills with abletons software.

About the Author

Dr. Michael Olpin is director of the groundbreaking Stress Relief Center at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Coauthor of the popular college textbook Stress Management for Life: A Research-Based Experiential Approach, he runs the website StressManagementPlace.com to help people everywhere discover that “the world is not a stressful place.” A lifelong athlete, Michael is usually out biking and running in the beautiful mountains of northern Utah, where he lives with his wife and four kids.

Homeless at age fifteen, Sam Bracken graduated near the top of his Las Vegas high school class, landing a football scholarship to the Georgia Institute of Technology. On his arrival there, everything he owned fit in a duffel bag, hence the title of his renowned graphic mini-memoir, My Orange Duffel Bag. Sam lives with his wife and four children in Utah, where he serves as global director of media for FranklinCovey and leader of the Orange Duffel Bag Foundation, a nonprofit for rescuing at-risk youth.

Nothing new here

Nothing new here. If you've read anything on mindfulness, meditation, or cultivating a stress free life, you've heard this all before. On the other hand, if you haven't read on those topics, this is an easy read with workbook type steps you can do to reduce stress. Dr. Covey's "7 Principles" is heavily quoted, and the authors make it plain at the outset that this book is directly based on his work. The front cover seems to indicate some sort of connection between Covey and this work beyond mere inspiration and admiration - is there a FranklinCovey method with a series of books?? Furthermore, it is noted that Grand Harbor Press is an Amazon-owned publisher (for what it's worth). Finally, I have to say that I've never come across a Forward wherein the writer promotes himself and his books so blatantly.

The best stress relief book I've read out of the hundreds of self-help books I've read.

Overall thoughts and feelings about this book

I absolutely loved this book! I will definitely read it again all the way through. The length is just right. It is not very short or very long. The stories, paragraphs and insights were short, to the point and impactful. The book as a whole was a terrific book to read and it no doubt will one day be a classic-a book stress experts will recommend all to read.

Content of the book

I thought it was brilliant to apply each of the 7 Habits to stress management. Many who love "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" will be very curious about how the 7 Habits can apply to stress management. The authors apply the 7 Habits to stress management through 7 Paradigms that they suggest we should all have. Because of this, it is a must have book that is the perfect companion to "7 Habits of Highly Effective People".

Product of synergy

In tribute to Steven R. Covey who recently passed away, I think this book takes what he envisioned and takes it to a whole new level. In fact, I think it is FranklinCovey's best book in a number of years. Out of all the hundreds of self-help books I have read, it is simply the best book on stress management I have read along with Dr. Olpin's book "The World Is Not a Stressful Place". I hope he writes more books. He is such a talented writer and I want to know more of his thoughts. Sam Bracken is a very talented writer also. He is very down to earth and businesslike-professional and personal. The synergy between the two authors is powerful. One is known for helping countless overcome stress related problems and the other is known for overcoming countless stress related problems.

Writing style

I thought the writing style was very down to earth and businesslike which is appropriate since this is promoted by FranklinCovey that is dedicated to helping businesses and people from all walks of life. Anyone who reads it will not have a tough time reading it. Most importantly, it stimulates the reader and gives them different ideas of how to perceive what is happening in their lives by being centered.

Things I learned

I have read a lot in my lifetime so not everything I learned in this book was new to me but the perspectives of the authors were unique and increased my understanding of what I already knew. One thing I really liked learning about was the gap between any stimulus and response. I learned that meditation widens that gap and that the gap we need to be in is the inner one. That was the most profound thing I learned. I also learned that the heart and spirit are different but complimentary to each other. I thought that was a unique perspective to think about. In sum, I would say this book has a lot of heart and spirit. I feel like a better person after reading it and know that it most definitely is a great book to unwind with.

Not a just prescription... it's a description of practical things you can do to reduce stress in your life!

Unwind is a phenomenal book that provides a practical application of stress reduction in one's life.

I read "My Orange Duffel Bag" by Bracken a few months ago and was amazed at the openness and clarity of his life story. It was an emotional roller coaster. Now imagine taking a life story like that – the kind where you think, "Wow – is this for real?!" - and combine it with proven principles, application and quite a bit of research. Presto! That's exactly what "Unwind" is.

A few of the highlights I took away:
- Stress comes from within. Your paradigm (the lense through which you see things) determines if you will be reactive or proactive.
- Choice is one of your most powerful abilities – you can choose your response. I had some parallel thoughts as a read from John Maxwell's "Today Matters"
- Choose to "live in the moment" and life will be much fuller
- Ever come back to work and have so many tasks that have piled up that you effectively shutdown? You need to Unwind! (hint: the book has some great practical applications to help)
- Other people ticking you off? Try, "You have a different opinion. I need to understand it." and see what happens (for the record... no one is asking you to change your opinion or even accept theirs... just listen to understand it).

I would highly recommend this book for anyone stressed out. And it's not very long – pretty quick, actually. So THAT's one less thing for you to stress about!

I hate cliffhangers! :-(

I read the book in one sitting because I could not put it down. It's a very captivating story. I would have rated this a five star book had there been just a bit more detail and description. There are parts of the story that skip over the details. I don't just want to be told something, I want it described to me in detail. A lot of erotic/dark romance stories rush through the story. If they would just add more to the story, it would bring the reader in and make them feel like they are a part of the story as an invisible intruder. With all of this being said, I'm going to be waiting impatiently for the next book to be released. DANGER ALERT.

The other side of Iran

This is a really enjoyable read and succeeds on a multitude of levels; it is thought provoking, it is touching, it is laugh-out-loud funny, it is entertaining and it is enlightening. It shatters most of our illusions about Iran and its people; it can be dipped into at random revealing fascinating glimpses of Iran's history, politics, architecture and everyday life, yet really delivers when read and savoured as a whole.

The situations that Maslin encounters on his travels range from the seriously life threatening to the totally unexpected, and often the plain bizarre. The sheer hospitality of its people is a real eye opener. Time and again the Iranians go out of their way to help this intrepid traveller, insisting on paying for his meals, for his drinks and for his taxis, and even insisting that he stay at their houses - just because he is a foreigner in their land and therefore their guest. This has the great benefit that we are able to read about the hidden Iran and how life is lived by its ordinary people, and get to understand their hopes and aspirations, and how they see the west.

This is essential reading if you're planning on visiting Iran - Maslin reveals that it has several international standard ski resorts for instance - but it goes way beyond the tourist locations in the guide books, yet doesn't pull any punches about the Iranian government: Maslin has subsequently been banned from re-entering the Islamic Republic! Very Good Travel Memoir

I thoroughly enjoyed this travel diary about a young Brit who takes an extended tour of Iran on less than $500. He does this mostly because of the incredible generosity of the Iranian people, who never hesitate to offer a meal or a bed to the author, simply because he's a foreigner. As an American constantly inundated with anti-Iranian rhetoric from the media, I found Maslin's experience refreshing and candid. I was lucky enough to get to know a few Iranians in college and always found them to be kind and generous, and this book only reinforces that view.

As I read this memoir I found myself laughing out loud and sharing many funny moments with my wife. Read the book and you'll discover these unexpected details of Iranian life: the popularity of Chris de Burgh and "German rock gods" Modern Talking; the effectiveness of the pick-up line "You are beautiful"; "super film" DVDs; the constant greeting of "Can I help you"?; whisky by the can; super-clean subways; friendly taxi drivers; ice cream-jello deserts; the abundance of old Range Rovers and new Hillman Hunters on the roads. The list goes on.

I also found it interesting that many young Iranians despise their government but love their country. A majority of the country's population is made up of young people, and Maslin effectively shows how these young Iranians accept certain Western values while rejecting others, all of which shows a country that is changing.

Some reviewers here have complained that Maslin's periodic discussions of politics and history don't belong, but I disagree. It's impossible to separate the image of Iran from its role in modern history, and Maslin weaves these brief passages about C.I.A. involvement and the 1979 revolution into places where they seem fitting. For the most part they are accurate and in line with what is commonly held to be true among experts on Iran. My only complaint is Maslin's description of the 1979 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tehran as a student-led, spontaneous event. In fact, the attack was a carefully orchestrated activity by the Ayatollah that went a long way in damaging Iran's reputation around the world. However, to say this book is anti-American because it points out a few ugly truths about American involvement in Iran is silly and just plain ignorant.

Read this book and you'll learn to appreciate your own culture while seeing what a country like Iran has to offer.

So close to being great!

Admittedly I read books on Iran just because, so the title didn't draw me. Which is good, because who ever thought it up didn't read the book in detail. The author tells a delightful story of his trip through Iran with a sense of humor the British excell at. And Iran is a fascinating place, especially if all you know of it is from the mass media. That said, I'd have liked more insight into the people and places he visited in this ancient, and complex society.

Poems and essays by Nathaniel Brodie, Alison Deming, Allison Dushane, Gregg Garfin, Ander Monson, Logan Phillips, and Paul Robbins provide poetic perspectives on the Rillito River; an overview of the region’s climate, hydrology, and water policy; a comparison between the theory and practice of interdisciplinary research; and a trail of the overlapping roles of science and art in the construction of contemporary concepts of nature from the Romantic period to the present.

Art and design projects include intercontinental comparisons of arid regions and river systems, finely detailed drawings and photographic series reflecting direct encounters with the local landscape, and collaborations with the Rillito River Project. One scientist in the project describes the ability of these creative projects to “transform messages from the stilted language of scientific literature into rich, multifaceted vocabularies that can be grasped by those interested, but inexpert, in the subject matter.” Turning the desecrated and overlooked dry rivers of Tucson into muse and inspiration, this project speaks volumes about community, creativity, and responsibility.�

Ellen McMahon is a Fulbright Scholar and University of Arizona professor of Art and Visual Communications. Her interest in combining the perspectives and methods of artists, designers, and scientists has led her into several collaborative projects focusing on environmental issues. Ander Monson is the author of a number of paraphernalia, including a website (otherelectricities.com), a decoder wheel, several chapbooks, as well as five books. Beth Weinstein is an architect, associate professor in the University of Arizona School of Architecture, and a performance scholar and designer.

Artful in Every Way

Ground|Water is an artifact as ecocritical as one could envision, right down to its physical substance produced and contracted for entirely by writers, artists, professors,and print artisans on eco-friendly materials. From the recycled paper to the vegetable inks, it is an elegant miscellany of text, essays, photos, drawings all pertaining to the Rillito River as it runs through the Tucson metro area as a drainage confluence revealing an ecological history of the Sonoran Desert. Like other desert rivers, this became dry as a result of the pumping of ground water for an exploding population and its trajectory and landscape are literally "inscribed" as a geological and cultural history of a vast geographical area. This handsome book both represents and is in itself a conservation project.

Ground|Water is proof that when artists and scientists converge to examine a public problem like climate change, awareness, intelligence and imagination flow like those old-time Southwest rivers! I hope that we see more communal efforts like this one between the University of Arizona and the Rillito River Project.

About the Author
Amy Thielen grew up a few miles from the headwaters of the Mississippi River in rural Minnesota. She cooked in New York City restaurants for seven years under chefs David Bouley, Daniel Boulud, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Shea Gallante. Since returning to Minnesota in 2008, she has written for Saveur, Men’s Journal, and the Star Tribune, and won a James Beard Journalism Award in 2011. Her Food Network show, Heartland Table, debuted in September 2013. She lives in the country near Park Rapids, Minnesota, with her husband and their son.

Amy Thielen delivers much more than a cookbook as she offers a brief history on the Midwest, and her experience of cooking in Manhattan's fine-dining kitchens. The heartwarming presentation in her introduction and notes throughout the book is inviting, and interesting. Amy Thielen portrays great tradition of American country cooking, as she discusses praise-worthy Midwestern restaurants. Her tour through the Midwest captivates the heart and soul, especially for anyone who has not visited, or lived there. There are several mouth-watering recipes with helpful tips, which also include the number of servings. The stunning photos of prepared meals, along with famous places in the Midwest are delightful, and refreshing. We tried the Fried Onion Dip, which was delicious. In addition, there are recipes for various dips. Some of the recipes include: Freshly Ground Black Pepper; Cheese-Balls; Homemade Italian Sausage; Old-Fashioned Pounded Cheese With Walnuts And Port Syrup; Steakhouse Deviled Eggs; Cracker-Crust Pizza; and more. There are many recipes for different types of pizza, and the recipe for Artichoke Fondue Dip is my next selection. The Spicy Beef Tartare, and the Sweet-And-Sour Potluck Meatballs are indeed inviting. I will leave updates as we try new recipes. Delightful, refreshing, and enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Cookbook Gold!

Hands down, my new fav cookbook!! From the fabulous recipes to the charming stories behind each one, and the beautiful photography... What more could a cookbook lover & cook want?
The recipes are easy to follow and reasonable, with only minimal amounts of what I would consider unusual ingredients. These ingredients, (like currants, for instance) are only unusual in certain regions of the Country, and are well worth getting acquainted with, for sure!! The recipes cover everything from breakfast to desserts and more. Even some bread recipes! I especially love that there are some canning and pickling recipes included, as well as some vintage and Scandinavian gems.
I was so pleasantly surprised to find a recipe for old-fashioned potato doughnuts here, that I actually squealed in the book store. LOL Why? Because for 25 years, my husband has often mourned the loss of his Grandfather's Depression-Era potato doughnut recipe. I have his Grandfather's old doughnut cutter, but have never been able to find a recipe. Finding the recipe in this cookbook was definitely squeal-worthy!
There is an emphasis on natural ingredients and on the hearty family meal in this book that I really appreciate. I also appreciate that it contains far more recipes that I will actually try than those that I probably won't. Cookbook gold!

i'm a cookbook collector and consider myself a pretty good judge of books and their usefulness. i was blown away by this book and it's smart, practical recipes. for those of you tired of books that ask for exotic ingredients or offer up overly complicated recipes this is the book for you. i'll be giving copies of this book away for christmas.
