I am author of several books including, "Basic Human Nature - good, bad, both, neither". I do not identify myself with any sect. This review is not my personal opinion I have based it on my study of different translations and commentaries of the Holy Qur'an. My criterion is to ascertain, which interpretation (irrespective of its source) best coincides with the QUR'ANIC text, The creative color-coded word-for-word translation of this work is excellent but, the "idiomatic translation" in black-&-white, at places, distracts from the Qur'anic Guidance. For example, for determining a reasonable minimum marriageable age, it would be appropriate to seek guidance from Al-Qur'an: 4:6, not from what the "idiomatic translation" of the Verse: 65:4 implies.
Holy Qur'an: 24:2 says, 100 floggings is the punishment of adultery. Here, the "idiomatic translation" qualifies it by adding the word "unmarried" to it, whereas, regarding the Verse: 4:25, the "idiomatic translation" does not mention the punishment of it for the unmarried slave. Moreover, adding the clause of, "Stoning to death for the married", and then going ahead to justify it by calling it "Allah's Law" is blasphemous.
Since, Holy Qur'an makes no mention of stoning to death and, in this context, makes no distinction between single and married, therefore, the most reasonable interpretation of it would be that the prescribed punishment of 100 floggings is a comprehensive statement. It relates to both, men and women (not married to each other) regardless of their own marital status.
Regarding the word "Zaraba" in Al-Qur'an: 4:34, the interpretation made - "beat them(lightly, if it is useful"- is quite appropriate however it would have been of further help, had the translators pointed out another meaning of it, also applicable in the given context, i.e. leave them or withdraw from them.
Quite often, it would be economical to remove the weevil or gravel from the stored grain and use it rather than to discard the whole thing, I recommend this publication for its color-coded component, as such. My rating for the color-coded translation is five stars and for the black & white translation, one star.
