Short, compelling, internally consistent and original enough. Maybe not my favorite piece of literature, but certainly nothing wrong with it as a piece of art. Hard to know who I would recommend this to. If you like scifi, then it'll probably be worth the time. Maybe best for scifi enthusiasts that are also enthusiastic about other things.

Mediocre, predictable tale

Even good authors sometimes produce lackluster work, and this is an example. It's obvious from the start how things will end up, and indeed they go exactly as expected. The protagonist's tale could be summed up as "Gosh, I was so surprised when my wife joined the alien cult after being increasingly obsessed with it for weeks." Well, duh.

I named my daughter Lya.

I read this in 1972 and was instantly a Gearge R. R. Martin fan. Martin has an excellent penchant for dialogue and imagery that allows you to believe that you are reading the real thing no matter how fantastic. A Song For Lya is obviously a very early work and you can tell that he is just starting to become comfortable with some of his recurring themes. But that doesn't matter once you are into the story. Because regardless of the number of technical things at which George R. R. Martin excels, story telling is his best. Enjoy the story.

A counter argument to all those who insist the Avant-garde is dead, this anthology gives license to so many works that are commonly discounted as "post-modern" or "contemporary" rather than trail-blazing or innovative. Professors Listengarten and Knopf have done an excellent job of defining half a century that, otherwise, has been generally left untouched.

Lukacs is an acquired taste--but one worth acquiring. His politics aside, this is an important exploration of how humans have come to be historically-aware beings. The new preface is a beautiful condensation of a lifetime's serious reflections.

Paul Singh is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the College of Medicine, University of Science, Arts and Technology at Montserrat, British West Indies. Excellent analysis of science vs myth

I loved this book. Authors Paul Singh and John R. Shook put together an excellent, well-written story about how humankind learned about our world. The book compares our knowledge of the world through science versus through myths. The book discusses a variety of creation myths and doesn’t just look at the western world. The authors also discuss the development of new technologies and how religious/conservative forces frequently reject these technologies. The book is philosophically similar to The Bible Is Not Great: The Truth About The Bible, Religion And God by Soren Sagan But the the Singh/Shook effort is much better written and the science is more accurate and detailed. I recommend Discovering Our World for anyone interested in the interaction between science and religion in terms of understanding our world.

Understanding why all those myths exist is the first step in recognizing wh they're myths!

if you're a religious person with a closed mind (am I repeating myself?) then you owe it to society to read this book and rethink your position. Although I've only just started it, it's already clear that it is doing a great job explaining WHY we have inherited all those creation stories and with just a little thought, it's not too hard to see why those myths can be vanquished forever as we continue to learn how things really happen.

Tremendously informational. Editing/production is of a lower quality than one would truly appreciate -- thus a deduction of 1 star. But the content goes so far is dealing with a wide variety of issues that other would have you simple "have faith" regarding. Science doesn't care about your (faith-based) opinion -- science is based in fact.

Good Intro to International Law

This book is a super-readable survey of basic international law. The treatment is thematic rather than technical: Bederman is content simply to outline the law and to put it in historical and political context; at virtually no point does his text bog down in exegesis of legal text or rules. For this reason, it is an excellent handbook for international relations majors or for law students embarking on a basic course in international law. On the other hand, it isn't a law school "nutshell": the text is too cursory to really help law students prepare for final exams.

Thematic Introduction

Bederma's work is a very thematic, introductory foray into international law. You can easily read this with no background in international law, yet I would caution you that, as this is thematic and introductory, do not expect to get in-depth case studies or in-depth analysis of various facets of international law.

I do recommend this as an introduction, however, because it covers the important facets of international law, including a chapter on international law's development. Present are chapters on the law of the sea, war crimes, jurisdiction, and others. The chapters are typically concise, giving you only the information you need while often citing court cases relevant to the particular branch of law.

On the whole, do purchase this if you want an excellent introduction, yet if you are looking for more in-depth analysis I would recommend supplementing this work with additional material. Indeed, I believe that is the greatest strengh, in a way, of this book: through covering the various themes of international law, it can enable you to understand what theme best interests you, serving as a launching point for future, focused study.
