Formatting better than most Kindle Commentaries!

I have purchased other Bible commentaries on Kindle only to find that they are a nightmare to navigate. Not so with this Gill commentary. Gill's commentary is a classic and should be used by all students of the Word, especially if you consider yourself Baptist. It is available online and in other formats but I like having it on my Kindle so that I can have it with me wherever I go. It is the best one I have found for the Kindle. It takes a bit of getting used to and with practice it gets easier but you do not have to spend so much time paging through to get to your passage. Also, the hyperlinks to the Scriptures are very helpful.

My new go-to commentary.

I'd used another, perhaps more widely known, commentary for a very long time...but then I found this one by John Gill. Now, after just a very short time, I only use that other commentary if I'm looking for a "second opinion" on a piece of scripture. Gill's commentary is amazingly in-depth, going much further in depth than any other I've seen. Where some commentaries have a paragraph or two about a verse, Gill has a page or two, discussing not only the doctrine and application of the verse, but some of the root words in Hebrew and Greek are mentioned when important to the understanding of the verse.

I recommend this commentary to anyone interested in finding a deeper understanding of the Scriptures. I have already persuaded several people in my Sunday School class, including the assistant pastor, to start using this commentary; everyone is very impressed with the insights he brings when I read sections of Gill's comments about the passage we're studying.

An excellent resource for Bible Study

I picked up a copy of Gill's Bible Commentary by Osnova earlier this morning and it looks very interesting. I read over the 23rd Psalms in the context of the commentary a little while ago and it did add to my understanding of what David was talking about. It's a good resource for Bible study.

Definitely try it ! Then get Rossman's book for sure and record your own.

I had Dr. Rossman as a professor for my masters degree in psychology, he is one of my favorite teachers of all time. The techniques for healing and using an inner adviser are mind blowing. Not only are they very effective you can learn to calm yourself and hear that voice in you at any moment in your life. It's like having the wisest counselor in the world tucked away in your pocket.

It's difficult to satisfy everyone's pace on audio cd, so I highly recommend getting Rossman's book "Guided Imagery for Self Healing" because he has a ton of the 'scripts' written out. You can record them in your own voice at your own pace and have fantastic results. The information in the book is a terrific resource as well.

I also highly recommend Dr. Bresler's book "Heal Yourself from Pain"... these two are colleagues and the level of experience here is world class.

Great depression aid

I purchased this product while I was in the depths of depression. I'd been suffering from the depression due to chronic pain and some other issues as well.
This CD was a wonderful relaxation aid for me, even though I would generally fall asleep before the end! Martin Rossman does the actual imagery exercises, and he has a wonderful voice which prompts relaxation itself. I would use the CD while feeling exceptionally depressed or anxious and it did help to balance my emotions, even if temporarily. I also used it many times when I was having trouble falling asleep, since it was so relaxing for me.
The CD alone didn't "cure" my depression, but it did definitely help me get through some very rough times. Anyone having chronic pain and/or emotional disturbances owes it to themselves to give this product a try!

Public school resegregation is a "national horror hidden in plain view," writes former educator turned public education activist Kozol (Savage Inequalities, Amazing Grace). Kozol visited 60 schools in 11 states over a five-year period and finds, despite the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, many schools serving black and Hispanic children are spiraling backward to the pre-Brown era. These schools lack the basics: clean classrooms, hallways and restrooms; up-to-date books in good condition; and appropriate laboratory supplies. Teachers and administrators eschew creative coursework for rote learning to meet testing and accountability mandates, thereby "embracing a pedagogy of direct command and absolute control" usually found in "penal institutions and drug rehabilitation programs." As always, Kozol presents sharp and poignant portraits of the indignities vulnerable individuals endure. "You have all the things and we do not have all the things," one eight-year-old Bronx boy wrote the author. In another revealing exchange, a cynical high school student tells his classmate, a young woman with college ambitions who was forced into hair braiding and sewing classes, "You're ghetto-so you sew." Kozol discovers widespread acceptance for the notion that "schools in ghettoized communities must settle for a different set of academic and career goals" than schools serving middle-and upper-class children. Kozol tempers this gloom with hopeful interactions between energetic teachers and receptive children in schools where all is not lost. But these "treasured places" don't hide the fact, Kozol argues, that school segregation is still the rule for poor minorities, or that Kozol, and the like-minded politicians, educators and advocates he seeks out, believe a new civil rights movement will be necessary to eradicate it.

In turning his gaze to school segregation, he discovers what should be obvious to anyone who has spent time in public schools—they are more segregated than ever. Kozol’s research and reporting is so extensive that no one can challenge his conclusions: Separate is indeed unequal, and as a society we are robbing successive generations of poor, minority children of their only lifeline out of poverty. Kozol examines the nation's long and troubled history of relegating minority students to the worst schools and the disheartening and growing influence of American business on these schools, which slot children to training for low-status jobs and careers. Lamenting that the nation has given up on integration without ever having tried it, Kozol advocates another civil rights movement to reenergize the struggle for desegregation. This book really opens your eyes and helps you to see how corrupt education in America is. This book is well written and uses a number of experiences as well as evidence to showcase the many descripencies in our educational system and how it affects everyone in a negative light.

Did Not Want the Book to End

I loved this book. I love memoirs and I love books about healing and this is both.

I won't comment about the abuse. How people can do that is always incomprehensible to me. And as for those who colluded, consciously or not, "Evil flourishes when good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)

I followed the author's path through life avidly, since I too have PTSD from childhood trauma. Her spirit was ultimately indomitable. Down sometimes, but never out. I was so delighted, and it reassures me in my own healing journey, to read of those actions she took which were self-affirming and healing.

I loved when she finally said, "No!" to the therapist who always took phone calls during their sessions.

There are beautifully written passages, particularly when the author rides her horse in the country and into the forests.

There were also lines I loved and identified with such as "intimacy meant annihilation". That's how I felt, too. Other people's needs came before mine. Other people defined who I was. I had no self, I was an instrument.

I loved the cultural references as I am about the same age as the author. (Chatty Cathy, Barbie, paper dolls, etc.)

Meditation became an essential part of her healing and she gave a very simple way to do it that I've already added to my practice.

Highly recommended.

Gives credibility to my own pain

I intended to read this book "piece meal." I did not think I would be able to digest it all at once, this story that is both so unlike and so exactly like my own. I finished it in a night. Well-written, sparing no detail, it is a gripping account of a girl becoming a woman, all in the face of sexual abuse, as well as psychological abuse. The amazing part for me is two-fold; first, she survived. Secondly, although our stories are so completely different, they are the same. The voices of inadequacy, doubt, shame, and self-loathing, they are the same voices that attack me. Just knowing that someone else knows these struggles, it makes my fight a little easier, softens these demons because when we share a voice, instead of having none, we create a place to exist. Read this book.

As amazing survival story

Patricia Grace's novel "Shattered" is a survival story. You would never know this is her first book, as she writes like a veteran. I would love to read future novels by her.

A must have for every parent!

I've been reading early childhood education books for thirty years or so. It takes a serious gust to qualify as a breath of fresh air. This is it. This book artfully, masterfully, and very clearly presents a lovely marriage of the theories of Maria Montessori, Loris Malaguzzi, and Howard Gardner. What you get is an accesible and immediately implementable roadmap to the best of Montessori, Reggio Emelia, and Harvard Project Zero. It's absolutely not a theory book though--it's all very practical. This a visually inspiring book full of hands-on reading, science, and social activities for children from three or four to about eight or nine. There is just enough child development background to give underlying meaning to the activities. There are reproducibles to make it come to life easily. And there are very thoughtful, helpful, and beautiful pictures to inspire the visual among us. This book has me happily reorganizing and purposefully planning to capture the joyful moments of my children's natural inquisitiveness and wonder right along with them.

Exactly the inspiration I needed

As I start my 4th year of homeschooling (with a newborn baby added to the mix) I was looking at my homeschool "room" with dread. I knew I needed to make changes to the physical space but I just could not visualize it. Nor did I have time to peruse hundreds of blogs and scans dozens of pinterest pages. This book has enough inspiring pictures, printables, and practical ideas to get me going for the coming year. I think any parent wanting to encourage their child's interests at home would benefit from reading this book. If you like Mariah's blog, you will love her book. I wish I didn't live across the country and could visit her brick and mortar store in person!

What a wonderful book!

I just got this book yesterday, and I am so excited to sit down and take my time with it. I read the section on the stages of writing first, and I have never read such an accessible, practical explanation of HOW to encourage developing writers. I have read plenty of theory, and seen the stages she writes about. But her book actually walks you through the reasons behind it while attaching it to the methods of encouraging a child to become a writer.

The book is full of practical examples, beautiful photos of learning spaces, easy-to-make learning activities.

Thank you so much for writing such a practical and inspiring book. I have been a fan of your blog for quite some time, and the book is even better!
