The myth of perfection debunked!

I was at a conference of math enthusiasts the other day to discuss kids and the state of math related children’s books. Not my usual scene but I was open to it. Despite what some might fear, the day was thoroughly fascinating and the mathematicians in attendance made many fine and salient points that I had never thought to consider. At one point they took it upon themselves to correct some common math-related misunderstandings that have grown over the years. Most fascinating was the idea of trial and error. Kids today live in an era where it often feels to them that if they don’t get something right the first time then they should just give it up and try something else. It’s hard to make them understand that in a lot of professions, math amongst them, much of the job consists of making mistakes and tinkering for long periods of time before getting to the ultimate solution. It got me to thinking about how there really aren’t a lot of children’s books out there that tackle this subject. Or, for those few that do, tackle it well. The remarkable thing then about a book like “The Most Magnificent Thing” by Ashley Spires isn’t just the way in which she’s gone about discussing this issue, but also the fact that it works as brilliantly as it does. This is the anti-perfection picture book. The one that dares to suggest that maybe a little trial and error is necessary when trying to get something right.

A girl and her dog are best friends. They do everything together from exploring to racing to making things. So when the girl has an idea one day for “the most MAGNIFICENT thing” that they can make together, the dog has no objection. Plans are drawn up, supplies gathered, and the work begins. And everything seems to be fine until it becomes infinitely clear that the thing she has made? It’s all wrong! Not a problem. She tosses it and tries again. And again. And again. Soon frustration turns to anger and anger into a whopping great temper tantrum. Just when the girl is on the brink of giving up, her doggie partner in crime suggests a walk. And when they return they realize that even if they haven’t gotten everything right yet, the previous attempts did a right thing here or a right thing there. And when you put those parts together what you’ll have might not be exactly like it was up in your brain, but it’ll be a truly magnificent thing just the same.

I think perhaps the main reason we don’t see a lot of books about kids trying and failing is that this sort of plot doesn’t make for a natural picture book. I won’t point any fingers, but the usual plot about success follows this format: Hero tries. Hero fails. Hero tries. Hero fails. Hero tries. Hero succeeds. Now hero is an instant pro. You see the problem. I’ve seen this plotline used on everything from learning to ride a bike to playing an instrument. And what Spires has done here that’s so marvelous is show that there’s a value in failure. A value that won’t yield success unless you go over your notes, rethink what you’ve already thought, reexamine the problem, and try it from another angle. In this book the failure is continual and incredibly frustrating. The girl actually has quite a bit of chutzpah, since she completes at least eleven mistakes before finally hitting on a solution. Useful bits and pieces are culled, but it’s also worth noting that the inventions left behind, while they don’t do her much good, are claimed by other people with other ideas. It sort of reinforces the notion that even as you work towards your own goals, your process might be useful to other people, whether or not you recognize that fact at the time.

Spires doesn’t cheat either. Our unnamed heroine idea is actually clear cut about what she wants to make from the start. On the page where it reads, “One day, the girl has a wonderful idea. She is going to make the most MAGNIFICENT thing” you can see her on her scooter explaining her idea to her now thoroughly exhausted pup. It’s only on the last page that we learn that the thing in question was to be a pug-sized sidecar for the aforementioned scooter.

Now Ms. Spires is no newbie to the world of children’s literature. If you have not seen her Binky the Space Cat graphic novel series for kids, it is about time you hied thee hence and found those puppies. In them, you will discover that not only is she remarkably good at the subtle visual gag, but that her writing is just tiptop. Some of the choices she made for this book were fascinating to me. It’s written in the present tense. Neither the girl nor the dog has a name. At the same time it’s incredibly approachable. I love how Spires relates the girl’s travails. The final solution is also all the better because even with her success it’s not perfectly perfect. “It leans a little to the left, and it’s a bit heavier than expected. The color could use a bit of work, too. But it’s just what she wanted!” Perfection can be a terrible thing to strive for. Sometimes, just getting it right can be enough.

And yes, I have to mention it at some point: It’s about a scientifically minded girl character. Now you might feel like this ain’t no big a thing, but let me assure you that when I was wracking my brain to come up with readalikes for this title, I came up nearly empty. Picture books where girls are into nature science? Commonplace. But books where girls are into math or invention? Much more difficult. There are a couple exception to the rule (“Violet the Pilot” by Steve Breen, “Rosie Revere, Engineer” by Andrea Beaty, and “Oh No! Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World” by Mac Barnett come to mind) but by and large they are rare. Yet if this had been a book where the whole point was something along the lines of even-girls-can-love-science I would have loathed it. The joy of “The Most Magnificent Thing” is that the girl’s goal is the focus, not the girl herself. Her love of tinkering is just natural. A fact of life. As well it should be.

On the back bookflap for this book we are able to discover the following information about Ms. Spires: “Ashley has always loved to make things and she knows the it-turned-out-wrong frustration well! All of her books have at one point or another made her cry, scream and tear her hair out as she tried to get them JUST RIGHT.” I guess that children’s authors really are the finest authorities on trial and error. They know frustration. They know rejected drafts. They know how much work it takes to get a book just right. And when all the right elements come together at last? Then you get a book like “The Most Magnificent Thing”. I don’t know how long it took Ms. Spires to write and illustrate this. All I know is that it was worth it. In the end, it’s precisely the kind of book we need for kids these days. Perfection is a myth. Banged up, beat up, good enough can sometimes be the best possible solution to a problem. A lesson for the 21st century children everywhere.

Magnificent Read

This story was so moving. The message was lost on younger students (PreK, K, 1st), but the ones who were a little older or more mature really understood the message that you don't have to be perfect or do everything perfectly to somehow make all the right pieces end up in just the right spot. It was uplifting to remember that it's okay to let things go sometimes, and the world will continue to support you somehow.

Interesting Ideas mixed with poor editing

I don't want to be too critical of this book as I think the author shows promise. The plot is interesting. The determined, serious heroine is intriguing although a bit cold and her almost boyfriend shows some potential for developing into a likable character in the next book. With that said, the terrible editing disrupts the flow more than once. For example, the heroine loses her heirloom knife in a fire and is heartbroken. Fifty pages later she is using it again with no mention of how she got it back. Also, early in the book her partner explains what a "mimic" is in the magical world but later on she says she doesn't know what that word means. A fire breaks out in her bedroom and destroys her bed, etc., but the heroine's clothes in that room are not damaged. On and on with sloppy inconsistencies.
I will read the second book hoping the author has a new editor.

Did not see ending coming.

Did not see ending coming at all, which was an interesting twist in the storyline. There were no clues, but unfortunately this may not be enough to maintain reader interest. Am assuming this is a new author, which may explain the really poor editing. Read other reviews and noticed similar issues raised that bothered me throughout the book. She is distressed over missing athame which just shows up later in a fight with no explanation. Partner explains what a mimic is, and he is later fooled by one. When another member of the team tells her to ignore the mimic, she proceeds to ask him what is a mimic. There are also consistent grammatical errors, which are tedious and distracting. Some issues regarding her supevisor and fellow team member are briefly raised but not further addressed. Will see if they re resolved In next book. Premise is interesting and so is main character, and plan to read next book to see how story develops, but honestly, if I had purchased the book at full price instead of reading it in Kindle Unlimted , I would not consider it having been worth the purchase because of sloppy editing.

Her best chance at accomplishing this was to get a job ...

Amber Morgan has come to America to find and kill the thing that killed her father. Her best chance at accomplishing this was to get a job with Elite, a sort of paranormal killing police force. This world has knowledge that vampires, weres and witches exist.
There are Hunters who work outside of government channels to kill the 'monsters'.
Amber has a secret that must be kept. She's a witch and has to keep it hidden
This shouldn't be too difficult as her mother always said she was disappointed in having a magical dud for a daughter.
We get to follow along with Amber and her adventures dealing with a jerk boss (the way Amber handled this had me shaking my head). A horrible murder/kidnapping case. A mysterious handsome stranger. Coworkers with agendas of their own.
Pity I just didn't care about it. Amber is so unpleasant that her fate doesn't interest me enough to read the rest of this series.

Good start, annoying ending

I want to start off by saying i never write reviews but i feel like I had to express my thoughts on this book. Ok, the book started off funny and interesting. Scarlett seemed like a strong heroine and Zeke seemed like a sexy alpha male, traits I like the two main protagonists to have. However, once it got to the middle and the end, it just started to drag and irritate the crap out of me. The characters were not acting their age and the conflict between them just kept repeating itself. Zeke and especially Scarlett who are supposed to be 24 years old acted like they were 18. Scarlett was so insecure and it was annoying to the point where i hoped that she wouldn't get her HEA. Also, the way Zeke talked really bothered me. He was fine in the beginning but toward the middle/end it was like a whole different person. He was still caring and sweet but he'd switch to being aggressive in a flash. It was disconcerting. And the way he wouldn't use "I" to start a sentence really bothered me. He just started omitting it out of the blue (for example: "Just got you back." "Don't know what else to do." "That what you really think?"). All in all the book was pretty predictable and had some pretty hot sex scenes but the way the characters started acting toward the middle/end just really brought the book down. It almost seemed like a different author stepped in to finish the book.

4.5 stars for Book 2 in the Powers That Be series can be read as a stand alone but if you are anything at all like me you will turn around and purchase book 1 - Gable (and you should hurry up because it's only $0.99) to read more about these four enigmatic brothers. Ezekiel (Zeke) Powers is a senior at Hallervan college majoring in finance but his immediate future is football and he is slated to "go pro" in April after blowing all the scouts and coaches away at the combine. Zeke is a gorgeous, generous, and slightly dominant male model of perfection. The man could not be a better son / brother / friend / lover and that is what seems to be Scarlett O'Rourke's problem because she feels he is too good to be true.
Scarlett lives by a strict set of rules that have basically put her social life on hold and has a two year run of self imposed abstinence going causing her to shut down any advances by men. This poor girl has had it rough not only while growing up but then she is forced to take time off school to help her dad out when her mom decided to bail on her and her little brother. Scarlett has dated but the few jerks she went out with were cheaters. Working two jobs, going to school and being a substitute parent to her little brother while her dad works as a long distance truck driver leaves Scarlett barely any time for herself so when the beautiful man is once again in the diner where she works, sitting in her section, and ordering breakfast she shuts him down when he asks her out but this time Scar is a bit morose cause good lord the man is hot!!! Zeke doesn't take no for an answer and actively pursues Scarlett doing one nice thing after another to prove he is worth the chance. I absolutely loved this story of learning to love and trust after being dealt a crap hand. Can not wait to read about the other Powers brothers in this sweet and sexy series :)

Loved it!

Something drew me to Scarlett. She's had some pretty crappy boyfriends, been cheated on more than once. Of course she's not going to be trusting. The man that wants her heart is going to have to prove he deserves it. I liked her determination. She's given up on men, choosing to stay focused on her life goal. That is until Zeke came into her life.

Lucky for Scarlett, Zeke perfectly balances his determination to get Scarlett, without going too far and scaring her away. He was very patient and understanding once he knew her past. He also supported her life goals, like a good partner should.

My only complaint of this book is that it seemed to end to abruptly for me. I feel like I needed more time to feel like Scarlett had proven that she was over her fear of being cheated on and that they would get their HEA. I also wanted to know more about Zeke's future and where Scarlett fits into all of it. Hopefully we will see more of this amazing couple in the next books in the series.

I can't wait to read more about these amazing Power's brothers.

A beloved classic of American Zen

This is a collection of talks by one of the first Zen teachers in the U.S. If you're already practicing Zen, I highly recommend this book. If you're new to Zen, you might love this book or you might find it largely incomprehensible, or maybe both. Suzuki makes liberal use of the paradoxical language that is typical of Zen--e.g., "For us, complete perfection is not different from imperfection. The eternal exists because of non-eternal existence." If you'd prefer a more ordinary, explanatory style, I recommend Charlotte Joko Beck's "Everyday Zen." If you're looking for practical instruction in Zen meditation, you'll find it in "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," but you might prefer either Philip Kapleau's "The Three Pillars of Zen," which includes more detailed instructions and illustrations of sitting postures, or Cheri Huber's instructional video "The Secret Is There Are No Secrets."

When I first read "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," for a college class on Buddhism, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but I did end up practicing Zen, and maybe this book had something to do with that. For many years, even while living at a Zen monastery, I suspected that a lot of the enthusiasm for this book was an "emperor's new clothes" phenomenon: a few respected people said it was wonderful, so then everybody said it was wonderful. I figured its aura of profundity was due in large part to Suzuki's congruence with our archetype of mountaintop gurus--the short sentences and limited English vocabulary, and the paradoxical language that sounds deep even though nobody actually knows what the heck it means. More recently, I've come to think that the emperor really does have clothes and that the big issues of human life are hard to talk about without paradox, and this is now one of my favorite Zen books.

A Wonderful Piece, All You'll Ever Need

This book took me out of the maze of faith-based religion and for the first time I found a teacher and a philosophy with so much credibility I had the confidence to trust in the more esoteric aspects of a teaching that weren't initially obvious. Suzuki, and I assume Zen in general, has the wisdom and courage to acknowedge that there are things about our universe that we cannot comprehend and treat them as both beautiful and mysterious. This contrasts with faith-based religions which instruct us to accept notions of "gods" and elaborate tales for explanation and as such are a complete assault on and violation of the intellect. Zen outlook which does away with the largely western notions of right & wrong, past and future, and states of lack will put one squarely in the present tense from moment to moment. It is utterly refreshing and healthy to look at the universe through glasses which are not colored by human desire and ego. Read this book, gain an understanding of yourself, an appreciation for the universe as a whole and piece of mind. Namaste

Misleading title for a possibly great book

I do not want to detract from this book's worth or wisdom in any way. No doubt the glowing reviews reflect the book's significance to the lives of those who have read and UNDERSTOOD it.

My only caveat is that for complete novices--like myself--the title is misleading, and therefore the book's teachings were not very accessible to me. The term "beginner's mind," as used in this work, refers to the idea of maintaining an open, childlike mind, and never acting or feeling as though one has ACHIEVED enlightenment. Be always searching, always growing.

"Beginner's mind" should NOT be taken as an indication that this is a book for those like myself who are newcomers to the study of Zen (i.e. "beginners"). Maybe you're an "old soul," but new to Zen, in which case, you may get more out of this book than I currently do.

As someone who instinctively feels that Zen has something BIG to offer me if only I can understand what the hell the books on Zen are talking about, this is NOT a good introduction. Zen terminology is thrown around as though I already know what the terms mean. The description of poses (without benefit of pictures) is confusing, and I must admit that I [shallowly?] found myself ticked off: if I couldn't figure out a stinking pose (or even get BEYOND the fact that I couldn't figure it out), how on earth was I "deep enough" to get my foot on the path to enlightenment?

For anyone who, like myself, needs something a little more concrete to get me started, something I can sink my literal Western teeth into, this ain't the book! I believe I personally need something a little less esoteric to start with, a book that bridges the gap between my VERY literal-minded Western upbringing and the much LESS literal mindset required of adherents of eastern religion/philosophy.

I also believe that if I am able to bridge that gap (using other resources), THEN I will be able to appreciate this book's teachings and will certainly come back to it.

Recommended by kindergarten teachers. Great starting books for beginning readers. The words are easy to read and it can help develop a high speed level of reading before going to more difficult books. The content of the books is not boring and kids seem to like it. The stories are fun and innocent, the print is large, and the illustrations are simple (doesn't distract from the reading). The books also have a high word content, from 85 words to over 150 and get progressively more difficult with each book. The back page lists sight words, vowels sounds, and consonant sounds used in the book so you can review before reading. Great for homeschooler's.

The cover is simple, it fits the book perfectly. This is the third and final book in the series. I was waiting for this final book as I am really enjoying the The Fire Series.

The conclusion of the series was just as I was expecting, exciting, action packed and full of fire. In this book we see more of Eoin, his name was mentioned through books 1&2, we finally met the real Eoin at the end of the second book. I wanted more Eoin and his bond brothers. Trystyn has been missing since he was a child, most of his family think he is dead, his brother is only one with hope that he will be found alive and well. He has been taken and hidden by Wynn who is stealing his amber fire. For why Trystyn doesn’t know.

Another fantastic book with a good storyline and a great plot. I was very impressed at how this book finally played out. This has to be my favourite book in the series. I loved the chemistry between Eoin and Trystyn. The six together are stronger than they realise.

This series will give you an insight into another world that runs parallel to ours… As we switch between worlds, we see the magik of the fire get stronger. I would recommend this series to all those that love a bit of magic in the books they read….

The Fire Trilogy satisfied all kinds of reading pleasure for me. Romance, magic, supernatural, mystery, intrigue, bordering on science fiction but not enough to add to that sub-genre, it really has a little bit of everything. All the characters are well written and will definitely leave a lasting impression. Watching the bond brothers, Kian, Darach, & Eoin, meet their other halves, Regan, Ceithin, & Trystyn is enjoyable and sexy. Watching the couples interact with each other and find their place in the quest for peace in both worlds is fun, sexy, and heartwarming. In my experience, fun, sexy, heartwarming are all things that can often be attributed to supernatural/paranormal fiction but to have all those emotions at the same time is rare and not easily done but Miss Scott has done just that.

I loved how this book ended. Eoin finally found Trystyn despite all the problems he was dealing with. It was Trystyn's love for Eoin that helped him to believe in himself and all of his friends. Erin
