Good application of OOP to numerical methods

I used this book to teach myself the subject matter. It is well written and uses the powerful advantages of object oriented programing. My only real criticism is the lack of a source diskette.

Good in its day, but seriously dated.

The copyright page of this book states “This book has been printed digitally and produced in a standard specification in order to ensure its continuing availability.” This means that you will receive, as I did, a brand new book, paperback, perfect bound, good quality paper and printing. It is 533 pages long including Bibliography, eight Appendices listing custom classes and headers, and an Index.

The text of the book that I received is that of the 2006 printing of the Second (Revised) Edition of 2000, based on the First Edition of 1996. The book uses Borland TurboC++ running on DOS as the implementation platform, with the the Second Edition providing corrections, C++ templates, and a substantial addition for those, in the author’s words “wishing to work in Windows”. The addition is a complete chapter, an Addendum, entitled “Programming in Windows”.

Now might be a very good time to stop. Stop reading this review and pass on - to another review and another book. This is a computer book written in the early 1990s, revised in 2000, that targets an obsolete platform and uses C++ code prior to the ANSI C++ standard.

The C++ the author presents is “C with Classes”, he takes the first two chapters to cover the C in C++, data types, derived types, pointers, preprocessor directives, etc, followed by sequence, iteration, and branching, and finally some items specific to C++, overloading and function templates.

Chapter Three presents the first of the numerical methods with truncation, rounding errors, stability, convergence, speed, amongst others, being addressed. Mathematical treatment for items such as, Rolle’s Theorem, Weighted Mean Value Theorem, Taylor’s Theorem and others is presented; you will need to be up to speed with your calculus!

These chapters are fairly straight forward and should present little implementation difficulty to an experienced programmer. Initially a complete program with a main() is provided to illustrate various points, so you can type it in, compile and execute. Code fragments and stand-alone functions start to appear; the tendency to present new materials in this form increases as you move through the book.

As the book progresses an occasional driver (main()) function is presented, elsewhere the assumption is that the reader will know what to do with the components presented. This can present difficulties, so if you do not know how to put a program together, compile and debug it, you will become frustrated very quickly; this is not a book for a beginner!

Classes are introduced in Chapter Five and the author uses custom classes for Strings, Complex Numbers, Arrays, and later Vector and Matrix, to demonstrate the structures of a class and the uses of public, private, friend, input and output streams, overloading, etc, etc. There is no disc or web site for this book, so if you want to use the code you will be typing it in yourself; the eight appendices are listings for a series of custom classes and headers.

Integer arithmetic, linear equations, vectors, matrices, systems of equations, differentiation, integration, and many other topics follow in the succeeding chapters, leading up to chapter on Fourier Analysis, it’s an impressive achievement. The mathematical treatment is solid, with many of the ideas being demonstrated with code fragments or stand-alone functions. Again a complete program is rare, so as mentioned above, you will have to integrate the examples into your own driver program.

There is one chapter on Graphics, that use the Borland/TurboC++ API for character based drawing. It is updated in an Addendum for Windows 95 and Windows 98 and Borland/TurboC++ OWL (Object Windows Library.)

The book appear to have been very well received in its First Edition. The world was very young then, DOS on the PC was readily available, C++, Windows, and the Borland products were new, and gaining market share. This book must have been unique, and in a class environment short work could be made of the need to type in all of the classes and headers - and provide the drivers to demonstrate the examples - and a motivated instructor could easily have pulled it all together.

But the world has changed, the technologies used are obsolete or no longer available and, of course, an ANSI Standard for C++ exists, and is now C++14. The mathematics is timeless and readily available elsewhere, as are software libraries for all items covered. If you want to be, as the author notes “close to the machine”, many other sources and the web are available.

This an OUP (Oxford University Press) book, and on their site they want $110 (plus shipping). This appears to have created a “price umbrella” with all other suppliers pricing from this baseline. Elsewhere on the web it is not much better, even for an original first or second edition or ex-library.

This is a lot of money for a technical book from the mid 90s that uses obsolete technology.

So why buy this book?

On the dedication page the author has the following interchange from The Path to Rome by Hilaire Belloc. LECTOR is reader, and AUCTOR is author.

LECTOR: Why one earth did you write this book?

AUCTOR: For my amusement.

LECTOR: And why do you suppose I got it?

AUCTOR: I cannot conceive …

A touch of tongue in cheek perhaps, the author having some fun? Or, a message to us?

Obviously OUP thinks highly enough to the work to ensure it continuing availability as a new book, and as the author of the book can no longer defend his work (not that I think he needs to), I am reluctant to be overly critical. However, given the obsolete technologies, the work you need to put in to make the code run, and the price for the book (new or used), I cannot come up with a good reason to buy this book. I believe that the this book was perfectly timed and of value when released, but not so for present times.

One star would be unfair, if not unkind, three stars unrealistic and convey the wrong message, so I have settled on two.

It is jus so so, like most books by either oxford or cambridge, a bit too concise and lack of explanation. Use complicated code to achieve simple goals. If you are a novice, want to computing in C++, don't buy this one.

About the Author
Amitava Dasgupta received his PhD degree in Chemistry from Stanford University and his fellowship training in Clinical Chemistry from the Laboratory Medicine Department of the University of Washington School of Medicine at Seattle. He is a tenured Full Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center located at the Texas Medical Center at Houston. Dr. Dasgupta has published 210 scientific papers, written many invited review articles, and has edited, co-edited or written 15 books. He is on the Editorial Board of five major medical journals including American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Clinica Chimica Acta and Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis.

About the Author

Sak Onkvisit is a Professor of Marketing at San Jose University, California, USA. He has authored several books and has published in leading journals. An internationally known scholar, he has taught in several countries and has served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and a Fulbright Senior Specialist.

John J. Shaw is Professor of Marketing and Director of the MBA Programme at Providence College, USA. His teaching and research interests include marketing management, international marketing, and consumer behaviour. Well written dark erotica

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If you are a fan of dark erotica, then I would definitely recommend reading The Payment Series by Cassandra Carr. But please be aware that this book is most assuredly dark erotica. That means it features dubious consent and it may creep you out a bit, but it has that erotic element that does not fit into any of the normal categories.

Catrina Carter is on the verge of losing everything because of her out of control spending. A friend recommends going to Debt Management Associates (DMA) for help. With little choice but to ask for help, Catrina accepts DMA’s unorthodox solution. She agrees to serve a man for one year and in exchange he will pay off her debt. But service means being her new benefactor’s sexual slave. Catrina must service her benefactor, Jared, and anyone that he chooses at anytime, anywhere. In addition, Jared has free rein to punish Catrina as he sees fit, and he believes extreme negative reinforcement is the only way to ensure that Catrina learns her lesson.

The Payment Series is not a romance so there is no love between Catrina and Jared, but Ms. Carr was able to show a connection between the two that intrigued me. Jared seems to want to help Catrina, but his methods are so heinous that the reader is left shaking their head in wonder. I was constantly questioning his motivation as well as Catrina’s willingness to accept so much pain and humiliation. But the point was that I couldn’t put the book down as I waited to see if Catrina had a breaking point and where was this twisted relationship going to end.

The sexual situations left me squirming and decidedly uncomfortable, but that is the heart of dark erotica. Ms. Carr was able to create an engaging story that pulled me in from the beginning. I winced with each lash of the belt, and cringed every time Jared humiliated Catrina. But that meant I felt and I always appreciate a book that can make me feel even when those feelings aren’t necessarily happy.

I was also impressed by Ms. Carr’s ability to create captivating, well developed characters, especially Jared. Based upon Jared’s treatment of Catrina, I really should have hated him. Yet I didn’t because enough of his emotions came through in order for me to not see him as a monster. In fact, I found it harder to respect and admire Catrina because of her attitude and lack of remorse. But that same lack of guilt made Catrina fascinating as I tried to better understand her thought process.

If I haven’t scared you away then you really should add The Payment Series to your to be read list because long after you’re finished reading, you will still be thinking about this book and wondering how far you would be willing to go if put in the same situation as Catrina.

I was pretty excited to read the Payment Series, by Cassandra Carr. I've read many of her books, and she is undoubtedly one of my favorite authors. So to say I was excited to see what she would do with a darker subject matter would be putting it lightly!

So as you can see from the blurb, Catrina has gotten herself into a large amount of debt. Hey, I've been there, I felt like I could sympathize. No, I wasn't in debt nearly as much as her, but as anyone who is drowning in credit cards can attest, there gets a point where you feel like you'd do anything to be rid of the debt! Lucky for Catrina, she tells the right person and they recommend her to the DMA. And right from the very first interview at the DMA, Catrina knows that this isn't going to be something easy. What she signs on for is basically a year of... voluntary sexual slavery, I suppose is what it comes down to. Anything goes except sexual penetration. And I do mean anything. Anything.

And anything certainly happens. Catrina goes home with Jared. And Jared is NOT shy. If you are into spanking and blow jobs, you will LOVE this book. There is plenty of that to go around! Sometimes it's very sexy, sometimes it's clearly punishment, and sometimes it's just to prove a point. The point? Stop spending money you don't have!!

The tone of the book is... well, it's dark. And a bit cold. I mean, this is not a love story. There is no stroll into the sunset. It's a business transaction. Now do I believe that it was emotionless? No, I don't. I just don't view it as romantic emotions. I think the two main characters developed a bit of a symbiotic relationship. I do think that they began to actually care for each other, and each other's well being. But I think Cassandra Carr did a really good job keeping the emotions out of it for the most part. Catrina is in a program to break her bad habits, and that can't be done with love and soft touches sometimes.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely - if you know what you are in for. I think that's important in dark erotica. There are a lot of sexual situations in this book. It's even broken down into numbers at one point. It was that point that I stopped reading for a moment and let the number sink in. Could I do what Catrina did? No way, I really don't think I'd survive that year. Did she learn a lesson? Well, hell - there's no way I'm telling you that! I really found the book very interesting from beginning to end! Check it out for yourself!

Good dark erotic story

This is the first dark erotic story written by Cassandra Carr and I think she did a good job depicting the unimaginable situation Catrina has gotten herself into with her debt and what she must endure for the next year. I couldn't help but feel sorry for her as she was "trained" to service her benefactor and anyone else he chooses. Her "training" included lots of oral and anal sex, punishment and spankings, which she clearly hated.

Catrina's situation continued in this same manner as she entered into her one year contract with her benefactor, Jared. Jared started out being cold, methodical and somewhat unfeeling though he never strayed from his agenda which was to teach Catrina on being more responsible with her finances. In the beginning, I wished the author wrote the sex scenes in more detail when Jared brought his friends home for her to service them but that was remedied in the later chapters. I believe these scenes were well written but somewhat repetitive. I was hoping at some point, Catrina would have learned to enjoy or find some pleasure.

There were rare moments when Jared showed he cared about her but these were few and far in between. I enjoyed those scenes and wished there were more of them in this series. I know that this is a dark story and not a love story but still wished there was more of an emotional connection. I felt towards the end, they were reaching that point and a shift in their relationship might be forthcoming. Overall, I did enjoy this story and the sex scenes were hot. The author did a good job for her first time in this genre.

I was looking for a book that anyone could read, and I found it. The math is minimal, the concepts understandable, and the illustrations add to the understanding. If you're looking to start making talking, thinking machines, look elsewhere. But if you want to gain an understanding of the basis for artificial intelligence, this is a place to start.
