A good place to start...

No nonsense list of recipes. Not for someone who has never formulated cosmetics or Toiletry items. One needs to have a working knowledge of ingredients and chemistry. A must have for formulators. Each recipe is a good starting point for further experimentation. Worth every penny.

useful learning tool and reference

This is a large book. The format is just one complete recipe after another; there is no other text. The recipes are given in terms of percentage of ingredient by weight. This is extremely useful, even for beginners just getting started with diy formulating. You get the idea of how ingredients are used just by reading the recipes--but you will definitely need some resource (the web is great) to figure out what each of the ingredients does. This is especially important for those recipes (and there are many) that use proprietary names for common ingredients or blends thereof. A diy recipe often includes more generalized names like 'emulsifying wax'; a recipe in this book might say something like that, but not necessarily. But once you get the hang of looking up these alternate names, you can figure out what you can substitute for those ingredients. By this means you can really learn a lot and begin to take your own formulations to the next level.

Complete but very concise instructions are provided, in terms of which ingredients go in which phase, what the temperatures need to be, and how the phases are to be mixed. Unlike the usual diy recipes which tend to have two, and rarely three, phases, some of these recipes include 4 or 5 phases. I'm probably giving myself away as a relative beginner by saying this, but that was an eye-opener for me, and I started to see my own original creations in a completely new light because of it. Some of the novel experiments I was trying just weren't coming together when I tried to squeeze everything into two phases; but many more achievements become possible when you are open to the idea of maybe 6 or 7 phases!

Brand names and product names are not usually provided; instead, the source of the recipe is provided, and that is usually a corporation name, which is not necessarily something the consumer knows. In other words, if you are looking for the recipe for Johnson and Johnson's Baby Shampoo, you won't find exactly that wording, necessarily. But you will find a recipe for SOME product that is a baby shampoo.

It's not clear how or why the recipes are collected. I have a couple of the other volumes as well as this one. It looks like the editor just collects as many recipes (in all divisions of cosmetics) as he can get in some time frame, puts them in a volume, and publishes them. So the volumes are organized by time. Thus, you really can't tell before examining a copy, whether it will contain formulations that you are interested in. For example, you might want to create your own waterproof blue mascara based on the formula for Maybelline's Black Stilleto, but you have no idea ahead of time whether that particular formula will appear in a particular volume.

So all in all, good as a learning tool and occasional reference. I got out of it exactly what I needed. But unless you have access to endless ingredients, don't expect to just open the book and be able to create any of the recipes on the spot.

A Successful and Tasteful Biography

Candace Falk, the official biographer of EG, delivers a compelling and tactful account of EG's personal life and its conflicts versus her high standards for living that she lectured on.

Falk stumbled upon EG's letters to Reitman through a friend, and took it upon herself to edit and organize the letters into a kind, yet considerably objective biography. Falk addresses inconsistencies in life, love, and lecture without forcing a bias upon the reader. Though at times waxing over-poetic to the point of absurdity (which is understandable with the subject matter and quality of personal letters between Reitman and EG), Falk's "Mission Statement" of the book was to deliver to readers a biography and examination of the letters that is tasteful without hurting EG's image, and accomplished just that.

EG's life was a struggle of fighting for social justice, while frustrated with her own tendency to get stuck in the grains of tradition and feeling inadequate and unfulfilled (as in her relationship with Reitman). Falk skillfully shares the intimate details of EG's love life and blunders with the care of an adoring daughter. This book is well worth the read even with its occasional flaw (or in this edition, the proliferation of spelling errors towards the end of the book). Overall, Falk pays just respects to the Mother of Anarchism. Highly recommended.

He is also a concert pianist, composer and recording artist who has released eleven albums of his own original piano compositions. His ninth album, "Overcome," won the title "Best Instrumental Piano Album of 2005" at the Lifestyle Music Awards. His tenth album, "Adoration: Solo Piano Hymns" went to #1 on the Zone Reporter Music Charts. David began promoting his music on the Internet in 1995 and by 2001 was bringing in enough income to quit his day job. This Book Will HELP YOU!

HALLELUJAH.... Thank you David Nevue!!! Finally a comprehensive and practical book on how to be a successful independent musician out here in the real world. The book starts at ground zero and works it way up methodically while drilling down and sideways through every last detail. This isn't the usual broad stroke - 30 thousand foot flyover of outdated or incomplete details you often get with most books. Nevue illustrates how to design the plane - build the plane - get the plane off the ground - keep it in the air - and get to a destination. The book gains it's credibility by having the author's experience written all through it and his success written all over it.

I have to admit that it overwhelmed me at first, but in a good way. I have been pretty under-whelmed by other books on the subject and I wasn't quite prepared for the real and tested mechanics of how to realistically build a successful career as an independent musician. Musical talent is not enough to succeed - you have to know this stuff.

Good luck finding anything out there about "Targeting Your Customers", "Setting Up Your Own Radio Station", "Booking House Concerts", "How NOT to Promote Your Music". Those and over 200 more subjects are covered in detail throughout this book!

I personally, have a long way to go before I can get my own plane off the ground. But I am glad the subject knowledge in this book exists. I am absolutely sure I'll need every bit of it to give me every chance to succeed.

Better than all the rest

Not only is the best publication about how to sell your music on the internet that I have ever read, but the information contained within this literary gem will be of great value to anyone wishing to make music a carreer. I have purchased other books regarding the music industry and how to succeed but this by far outstips the others by a mile. You can buy this book with confidence, the author is who he says he is....a genuine musician...with the same hopes and aspirations as his readers and like his readers he likes to cut through the waffle. I can't rate the book or the author highly enough.

Not that long ago, it was commonly believed that you pretty much had to have a record deal with a major label in order to get exposure for your music. The Internet, however, has shifted that paradigm and the playing field is considerably more level, enabling independent musicians to promote themselves in ways that were inconceivable in the past. That said - how does one go about doing it? It's not as simple as it sounds, and there are a myriad of possibilities, not to mention pitfalls, as well. Having read a fair amount on this topic over the past few years, I'd have to say that David's book is about the best map I have come across for helping to navigate the complex currents of online promotion in the music business.

The book is literally packed full of information and resources based on a proven track record, without any hype, theoretical ideas, or get rich quick schemes. It's the real thing. According to David, "I've lived this book! Everything in it, every idea, suggestion, and strategy within its pages comes from my own life experience." I am genuinely impressed by the wealth of information this book offers and am looking forward to putting it to work in my own marketing. Part of the reason for the success of this book is that it is extremely user-friendly, well written, and easy to understand. My only wish is that I had been aware of it a few years ago. But I'm glad I found it now and am happy to give this book my highest recommendation.
