Who is this book for?

I find this book frustrating.

The presentation is very poor. Topics are broached willy-nilly with paltry discussion. Sometimes it's just plain laughable. For example, Box 1.3, discussing the particle in the box: "There is one further restriction that we shall simply state: the boundary condition for the particle in the box is that [the wavefunction] must be zero when x=0 and x=a." Instead of a simple statement of this and expecting the student to take it on authority, why not give the *reason* for these boundary conditions, which can be summarized in a single sentence, i.e. 'the wavefunction must be continuous with the region outside the box, which is also zero'? Another example from the first chapter: the section "Ground state electronic configurations: experimental data". After I read this section I couldn't help but think to myself "where's the experimental data? what was the point of this section?"

Which leads to my second criticism: who is this book for? It's too advanced for undergraduates and not advanced enough for graduates. This book attempts to be all-things-to-all-people, in my opinion, which makes it good for no one. It's as though the authors took an undergraduate text and added a few more bits here and there, sporadically, without rhyme or reason. This may or may not be the reason that this book weighs SIX pounds. The authors tried to shoe-horn too much into this book.

Finally, the aesthetics of the book are atrocious. The color scheme used is distracting and hard on the eyes. Dark primary colors and light pastels on the same page?!? On some pages you can count up to six different colors used for separate things. I feel like my eyes are being pulled every direction and find it difficult to concentrate on the text.

However, I do feel like this book may be a good review book. Do you need to freshen up on a wide variety of inorganic chemistry topics without going too much into detail on every topic? This text may indeed suite that purpose very well.

But, being a grad student and having been assigned this book, I have found that in reading it I'm viewing material that is either far too basic and general and therefore a waste of my time or I'm given insufficient details for true understanding when it comes to advanced material. This is why I find this text frustrating and have given it two stars. If it weren't for the encyclopedic nature of the text, it would have received only one star.

Not Detailed Enough

I realize that this is supposed to be an introductory book, however it does not provide enough detail to be very useful in my 2nd year inorganic chem class. I am extremely disappointed by this since the book costs so much money. I wonder how much more it would cost if it was hardcover.

It does have a good layout and bright pictures and colors though. I guess this is supposed to stimulate the brain or something.

When I first took inorganic as an undergrad, I didn't think that this book was clear enough. As a stand-alone text, it was not adequate. However, once I paired it with Shriver and Atkins, many of the holes were filled in. (Interestingly, Shriver/Atkins alone wasn't adequate either). They needed to be paired- particularly when studying M-O diagrams and lattices etc. I would also recommend Metal-Ligand Bonding by Janes and Moore. This combination was my elixir...my inorganic triumvirate. Hope this helps.

Not for beginners but will fire your desire to play the Nimzo-Indian

This is by no means a beginner's book for the Nimzo-Indian but for any player looking for a dynamic and exciting defense, Mr. Kosten's presentation and explainations will light that fire that at times seems to be only low-glowing embers when a wood-pusher gets stuck in a rut and seems to be riding along with the same old openings and defenses and all one's games start to look like the previous games. For anyone who has played regularly for years you will probably be nodding in agreement as we all get caught in that narrow ditch at times and even though we know we're there and why we're there, it's difficult to yank the wheel to the side to jerk oneself back onto the roomier highway where there are more options by which to travel. In short, chess players can actually get to enjoy the same only look on the board so long as it is bringing them consistent wins and draws.

But chess is not just about wins and draws ... it is about learning, it is about challenges, and it is about that fire in the belly. You remember that fire, don't you? Perhaps it was last there even decades ago when you learned say the Hyper Accelerated Dragon (that was one that sticks out in my mind as being so exciting I wanted to play standing up ... of course, I was young and just learning proper openings and well, to be honest, the name itself was exciting just as the daring-do the opening brought with it in my young opinion). But the feeling that such new advances and paths bring are never forgotten by the chess player even though later on we don't mind getting stuck in that forementioned ditch.

Mr. Kosten though brings plenty of enthusiasm to his writing and examples and one can immediately tell that he is one who likes to travel on either side of the highway with the many options the Nimzo-Indian provides. Just looking at the prominent names attached to the variations should give a player a good idea just how well thought of and how well thought out prominent players have given of themselves on the different paths of the Nimzo-Indian: The Tal Variation, The Rubenstein Variation, The Botvinnik Variation, The Taimanov Variation (a favorite of Nukhim Rashkovsky as well as a variation used by the young Fischer), The (Bruno) Parma Variation, the Smyslov Variation, The Bronstein Variation, The Karpov Variation, The Larsen Variation, The Averbakh Variation, The Kasparov Variation ... and on and on ... so many great players and analysts have lent their time, efforts, minds, and names to this defense that there certainly MUST be something good there.

Go through a beginner's book first though ... "The Chess Openings Essentials" four-volume set is a fine beginner's guide to all the openings one can think of and is presented in logical groupings, sensible layouts, and clear, concise language that it should be in every player's library and should also show signs of being well-used. The books aside from holding all the knowledge to get a beginner ready to take the next step on his chess highway, they are bound very well for paperbacks produced these days (they of course are not the quality of those wonderful old Dover, heavy-stitched paperbacks that are still holding up perfectly well in my collection even though they are nearly half a century old but this four-volume set has been poured over by myself and my students and are still in very good condition).

So post-beginner and ready to make a big step forward, Mr. Kosten's book will help to launch a talented youngster up several challenging steps while giving an intermediate club player a new fire upon which to build a more exciting repertoire.

Very Nicely Done

This 267 page volume published in 1994 is one of Kosten's finest works. It probably would be best though to get a more general work on the Nimzo-Indian before embarking on this one. The move order (1.d4 Nf6, 2.c4 e6, 3.Nc3 Bb4) is easy to understand and allows Black quick development. Invariably White is either saddled with 2 c pawns after Bxc3 bxc3 or if White chooses an early Qc2, the White Queen captures at c3, but this slows down White's development since he has made 2 Queen moves so early. One word of caution though. White decides on Move 3 if he will allow the Nimzo-Indian to be played by Black, or instead choosing 3.Nf3 which usually leads to the Queen's Indian defence (3.Nf3 b6). You really need both in your opening repertoire as Black if you're not a King's Indian or Grunfeld defence player (2.c4 g6). Of course if you're really ambitious you could try the Blumenfeld Gambit if White offers 3.Nf3 (3...c5, 4.d5 b5!?) but it's hard to find deeply analyzed material on that. Needless to say, the semi-serious to serious chess player needs to know this defence as Black against the Queen's pawn player. I would also suggest a book on the Benoni defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5, 3.d5 e6) and the Benko Gambit (3.d5 b5).

Excellent as a game collection

For those of you that play the Nimzo-Indian Defense, this is a great game collection of 189 deeply annotated games. I would recommend first reading "Mastering the Nimzo-Indian With the Read and Play Method", also by Tony Kosten, first, and then when you have a feel for all the various lines and pawn structures, tackle these 189 games.

This story is very unlike The Neverending Story and Momo

As one of my favorite authors, reading every Michael Ende book is an important priority for me. However, let me warn you that this story is very unlike The Neverending Story and Momo. It is really just a sequence of short stories; each sounding like a recap of a dream (as Ende writes, somewhere between awake and asleep).

The illustrations, though fascinating, make little sense in relation to most of the stories. However, it is interesting to point out that they were drawn by Edgar Karl Alfons Ende, Michael's father, who was a Germany surrealism painter.

Since it is impossible to provide a detailed overview without a super long summary of all twenty nine different stories, I will briefly describe how it starts and how it ends.

Story overview:
---------------
We begin with Hor; a man who is unable to speak in anything other than a whisper. He lives in a house with endless rooms. The only windows are ones that open into the next room, which looks just the same as the former. He lives off a yellowish, slightly transparent substance that resides on the walls and columns.

Hor claims to have kept a faithful record (I assume he means, mentally,) and then the following twenty eight stories unfold. When we come to the last story we find ourselves in a snow-covered plain. In the midst of the plain are the ruins of a wall. In the wall is a closed door. The peculiar thing is--other than a door appearing in a wall in the middle of nowhere--one can easily walk around to simply see the other side of the door. It is as if it only goes from one side of the wall to the other.

Two sentries keep guard to prevent anyone from entering or leaving. That is, until one day when a young man, accompanied by a Princess--by her bidding--ventures inside. His mission is to find and destroy her evil brother that lives within, and this brother's name happens to be Hor.

My thoughts:

Very interesting stories. Deep, insightful, sometimes confusing, yet wonderfully intriguing. I particular liked the story of the man being guided across a desert only to end up an old man when he finally meets his fianc�, who sets out to find her fianc� not knowing it is him. The twist was that he too saw an old woman greet him before his adventure, which obviously was the same woman. Yes, I know, it is strange, which is why I do not suggest this for the modern "only" reader. It is very esoteric in a sophisticated sort of way, if that makes sense. In other words, do not pick this up for light and easy reading. Pick it up to be fascinated and confounded. If you find dreams interesting, than this book is for you.

Things to consider:

This is probably not appropriate for a younger audience. Aside from the fact that most modern youth would be bored by the third page, there are some adult themes here: a few references to nudity, some to sexual situations, and some slightly crude. There are also several disturbing scenes such as the man with a doll-like face who devoured human viscera (intestines) from a bowl. But these things take on the creative form that makes sense for these dream-like tales. I would say later teens and older. Not specificity target towards men or women.

A very good book

I read the book many times, and I know some of the stories from memory. The book has a very strong mood, and Ende's father's pictures are making it even more strong. Most of the stories are sad, and each of them is very thought-provoking. I recommend it for everybody, who likes Ende's other writings.

I read this years ago, now, and regret selling my copy. I am looking for another copy, to keep. I remember how the very final *word* in the book caught me by surprise, left me gasping for breath, although I suppose a more sophisticated reader would have seen it coming.
The book is a series of vignettes through which a number of themes are woven. For me, the most important among these was the idea of people trapped in stasis by their own cowardice - unwilling to change for fear that all their effort up till now will have been wasted. Reading this book was instrumental in eventually breaking me out of a religious group I was involved in, although I did not realize it at the time.
Have a read of this, and Edmund D Cohen's "The Mind of the Bible Believer".
