The book represents a major contribution to our understanding of the impacts of AIDS in the epidemic's heartland, and how these can be managed at different levels.

If I'm ever on a deserted island...

...this is the one book I'd want to have with me (especially if that deserted island was in the South Pacific or the Carribean--I'm a huge fan of Tiki). Far from just being a "Mixology for Dummies", Trader Vic(tor Bergeron) gives his best advice on mixed drinks (including a section on non-alcoholic beverages), along with years of salty wisdom gleaned from his experiences in the world of bartending. I read it in leisure time to get a few ideas on what I want to venture into in my next excursion into the realms of ethyl alcohol. If you love to drink, but only have a few favorites and are not sure about what to try next, this is the book for you!

Very clear introduction to a difficult subject

Symbolic Logic can be a very daunting study, even to those already familiar with traditional Aristotelian logic. Langer's book, however, makes symbolic logic comprehensible to the average educated person, so that the array of logical symbols and mathematical formulae employed in symbolic logic seem not so intimidating after all. Clarity of presentation is this book's chief virtue. Admittedly, it is a bit dated, but for someone approaching the study of symbolic logic for the first time, it cannot be surpassed. It would make a suitable textbook for an introductory course in Logic, perhaps in combination with Mary Michael Spangler's "Logic: An Aristotelian Approach" (a good choice for traditional deductive logic).

High Marks for Clarity, Good for Self-Tutorial - Offers Historical Perspective

An Introduction to Symbolic Logic by Susanne K. Langer is quite useful for self-tutorial purposes. The author's informal, wordy, enthusiastic, narrative style is quite engaging, and should appeal to readers new to this topic. Her explanations are detailed and carefully constructed.

However, Langer's classic text is now rather dated; her first edition (1937) is credited with being the first introductory level text on symbolic logic. The second (1953) and third (1967) editions offer new prefaces, updated reading lists, and expanded appendices, but are not dramatically changed. The third edition (1967) is still available in an inexpensive Dover reprint.

Symbolic logic was a young discipline when Langer was writing her first edition. The classic work of Boole, De Morgan, Schroeder, Peano, and Frege had all occurred in previous seven decades. Not everyone agreed, but many logicians still viewed Whitehead and Russell's monumental Principia Mathematica (1910-1913) as the detailed reduction of all of mathematics to logic.

Susanne Langer's personal choice of some symbols now seems idiosyncratic, but to be fair it should be noted that even today's textbooks have yet to agree fully on a standard set of logic symbols. What really dates Langer's text is her effusive admiration for the "logistic masterpiece" of Whitehead and Russell. Not surprisingly, her text culminates, after much preparation, in two final chapters devoted to Principia Mathematica and logistics. Reading Langer is like reading history. (And I for one do enjoy reading classic mathematical texts, monographs, and papers.)

Langer's early chapters include the essentials of logical structures, generalization, classes, principal relations among classes, and the universe of classes. The latter half is more challenging with chapters titled The Deductive System of Classes, The Algebra of Logic, Abstraction and Interpretation, The Calculus of Propositions, and of course, The Assumptions of Principia Mathematica. Readers already familiar with the fundamentals of symbolic logic might skip the early chapters.

Langer made no mention of Godel's incompleteness theorem despite its direct reference to Russell and Whitehead's work. Godel's classic 1931 paper was titled "On formally undecidable propositions of Principia Mathematica and other related systems". Perhaps, Godel's work was judged too technical for an introductory text.

My review refers to the second edition of An Introduction to Symbolic Logic. My 1953 soft cover Dover edition, a library discard, is still in surprisingly good condition.

A very practical psychological thriller!

I enjoyed reading this book far more than I had anticipated, it is a thriller and an amazing window into the humans psyche.
Hacking the Human is a book about Social Engineering Techniques and Security Countermeasures. It should be a must read to all Physical security management, and Information security professionals, I always thought it would be really hard to map the ISO27002 controls with Social Engineering and yet the entire book is written around the ISO27001 standards this alone is worth the price (little high) of the book.

The book is divided into 3 sections
.- The Risks
.- Understanding Human Vulnerabilities
.- Countermeasures
I wish I could tell you which section or what chapter is important so you don't have to read the whole thing, but I couldn't they are all equally important. Except for some deviations away from information security topics the entire book is like a Symphony by Mozart; Mozart's question sums it all up "Which few did you have in mind, Majesty? " when told by Emperor Joseph II "Your work is ingenious. It's quality work. And there are simply too many notes, that's all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect."

You may say "....but I have read The Art of Deception by Kevin D. Mitnick (and William L. Simon)" which was a great book and also a must read to further learn the human behavior, however in comparison to the Hacking the Human they are totally different. Kevin does not dwell on standards simply concentrates on the brain's vulnerabilities, Ian on the other hand wrote the book as a manual for an existing Information Security Management System, he is even almost apologetic for headlining risks identified "which may not be fully ISO 27001 compliant risk assessment" as seen in chapter 12 - Testing.

I seriously recommend this book as a great Information Security learning tool. Can also come in handy for Poker players.

Finally! A comprehensive book on social engineering

As a researcher of the topic, I was glad to find Mann's book on social engineering. It makes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on the social issues of information security. This is the second book that has been truly devoted to social engineering, the first one being Kevin Mitnick's Art of Deception. Mann takes the issue further with his methodical and systematic approach.

This book has great value, as it frequently refers to standards such as ISO 27001, providing high industry relevance. The book provides a clear view to the topic with sublime clarity, explaining underlying psychological weaknesses exploited by the attackers. Hacking the Human covers all related topics on the issue, from explaining why social engineering has not received the attention it deserves to why your company is at risk, and more importantly, what you can do about it.

As we learned from Mitnick, people are the weakest link in the chain of information security. With Mann's Hacking the Human, you can make it the strongest one, the first line of defense. I gladly recommend this book to everyone interested in the topic.

Good resource

The Ultimate Guide to Prayer is the 3 in 1 Collection of Dutch Sheet's best seller books on prayer; Intercessory Prayer, How to Pray for Lost Loved Ones, and Watchman Prayer. Each of these books alone is an invaluable resource on the topic of prayer. In this book you get all three resources in one handy location that makes it easy to have hands on information on a multitude of resources regarding prayer.

In Intercessory Prayer he discusses the basics of prayer and how important your prayer is as an individual. This section has a Leaders Guide that is very helpful. Sometimes we underestimate the importance of our prayer life and the impact of it on those around us. In How to Pray for Lost Loved Ones the subject is much more personal and close to home. Sometimes the most difficult prayers are for our family and those we love dearly. The last one is Watchman Prayer. Again this one has leaders guide for discussion purposes.

This is the best way to get a set of all three books in one easy place.

PRAYER IS WHAT WE ALL NEED

Dutch Sheets is one of the best writers on prayer. I chose to have all three best sellers in one book so I can have all three for reference in one place. All Christians that are serious about his or her prayer life need to read Dutch Sheets books on prayer. Writers and readers alike will want to read and use this book in their study on prayer. If there was a six star rating I would give it.

Questions to get you through anatomy!

My anatomy exam scores differed based on whether I did the questions in this book or not (did questions=did well; no time to do questions=barely passed). There are A LOT of questions in this book - which is great, because most concepts repeat and this of course reinforces learning. It also means that you should start the questions ASAP - don't wait until you've finished reading the text, dissector, whatever. Use your text and atlas as references while you start the questions right away!

All questions are in multiple choice format, either in "standard" type A format (A-E, single best answer), or in type K format, which I had never heard of before this book but got used to it fairly quickly. There are no pictures, tables, or diagrams (that's what your text and atlas are for). The thorough explanations are on the right side of the page opposite the question.

I highly recommend this book based on my anatomy experience.

The best way to get honors in medical school anatomy

This book is hard to find, but well worth the search and expense. If you are aiming for a competitive residency, you know how important it is to honor classes. The "blue and gold book" will help.

There are over 2500 multiple choice questions listed on the left-hand side of the page. On the right-hand side are in depth answers. The chapters are organized by anatomical areas that mimic course progression. Important concepts are reinforced by having the same idea reworded in multiple questions.

The more questions I did, the better I scored on my anatomy and embryology exams. Some of my exam questions were nearly identical to those I encountered in this book.

Quantity and quality!!!

RQ series(Parthenon Publishing Group inc) are lesser known than other board review books, but offer in depth review in a question and answer format similar to the "Recall" series books, but with multiple choice questions. RQ is a bargain for the number and quality of the questions!!
