Good introductory to the wireless world

This book is mostly intended for non-technical people looking for a gentle introduction to the wireless/mobile devices world with a comprehensive survey of the existing technologies.

Confused by acronyms like GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, WAP, WI-FI, Bluetooth? This book will cover all that and much more. The author did a fine job by carefully and systematically explained the key wireless technologies in a high-level manner that appeals to a broader audience. Engineers and developers will be disappointed though by the lack of code samples, mobile development strategies and discussion of current mobile devices specifications

Decent wordy book about basic concepts

I am not sure how to classify this book! Is it a book for a manager? Maybe! Is it a book for a developer new to mobile application development? Not quite! Is it a book for a hardcore technologist (architect, sr developer, product manager, etc)? Definitely not so.

The content of the book is definitely dated (as of 2006). But, I wouldn't blame the author for this. The field of mobile apps is moving very rapidly. There is a lot of confusion, but, a lot of the smoke is also clearing up. Interesting initiatives like OMA are taking center stage in "clearing up the smoke".

The book is way easy to read. But, that's because it has zero technical content. The book touches a lot of interesting technologies, but doesn't provide details on any. It is my belief that the author could have summarized most of the book in maybe 50 pages, or even less!

The book's biggest value is for somebody new to the field. Its a very quick read. There are tons of web links (again dated, but, some very relevant even today) to consortia, forums, companies involved in mobile application development. I was really hoping that the author would put this list online. But, I haven't found anything similar after searching on the author's name in google.

I usually don't read books word-by-word, line-by-line. I try to grasp the big concepts on the first read. This makes me the worst person to find grammatical mistakes in documents/books. But, even I could find grammatical mistakes on the first (and only) read of this book. The editors need to do a better job next time (if there is a next time).

A great place to get started!

I don't really know much about the wireless space, but I do know some J2EE and other distributed technologies. As a novice, I found this book's first few chapters very informative, and it gave me a chance to zone in on a few key chapters based on my anticipated needs. It covers various mobile solution architechtures and constituents using many examples. When I did have questions, or if I wanted to look at some in-depth samples, I just followed the web links at the end of a particular chapter, and that usually answered them, or at least pointed me in the right direction for more info.
I think the biggest thing I took away from this book is that, while the mobile and wireless space is always changing, designing and developing mobile applications relies on a few fundamental concepts (e.g., mobile solution architecture does vary from enterprise solution architecture). This book focuses on these key design and development concepts. So for people looking for a complete overview of the industry, this book will provide everything you need. If you are looking for complete code examples that you can use to start building applications, you might want to look at books that are dedicated to the topic of interest. Since this book covers so many topics, it does not provide sample code for each type of application. This would have been nice, but it also would have made the book twice as long and not as focused on application design.
Overall, I liked Mallick's writing style (not too dry, not too fluffy), and I did learn a TON of stuff from this book. I'll definitely be wearing out the book's spine while I'm learning the moblie and wireless space's ropes.

About the Author
Ruth P. Saunders, PhD, is an professor emerita�in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Saunders has 25 years of research and practice experience in conducting program, policy, and practice change in organizational settings, including preschools, schools, after-school settings, children’s group homes, and faith-based settings. Her roles in these projects, which include eight large-scale interventions, have encompassed using multi-level conceptual models to develop a comprehensive model of organizational environments, constructing scales and indexes to assess contextual factors and implementation processes, addressing challenges involved in intervention design and implementation in field-based settings, and designing and carrying comprehensive intervention implementation monitoring. She has authored or co-authored numerous publications based on her research. Dr. Saunders also has 28 years of teaching experience with master’s and doctoral level courses in program planning, program evaluation, process evaluation and implementation monitoring, and interventions targeting physical and social environments.

A wonderful resource for researchers and practitioners

This is a first of its kind book from a leading authority in implementation monitoring and process evaluation. Long the 'stepchild' of evaluation (which itself get's short shrift in the public health community), implementation monitoring is essential to quality improvement efforts for community-based interventions. Let's face it, your program is not going to work perfectly the first time (or the second, third...), so you should have a well developed plan for collecting data that you can use to figure out what went wrong or to fine tune your program. This book is written in plain language, contains many informative real-life examples, and presents many useful templates for your work. In the spirit of full disclosure, I have known and worked with Dr. Saunders for years, but this is truly a wonderful resource that I'm very happy she finally had the time to write. If you implement programs or interventions in community settings, you should purchase this book.

Possibly the ' overall ' " BEST " Chess book ever written...

do you play chess, then simply you must own this book? The title is all wrong if you think it is for kids; my chess rating is not very high so i cannot speak for chess experts...
But for anyone under the chess expert level this is probably the greatest chess book ever written, there are many chess books and i own around 75 (and i look at them as well, they do not always just collect dust). So as an 'improving' player this one book will EASILY add 200 points to whatever your rating is if you follow the advice and tips in this single book...
It starts with basic stuff like how to play chess and also talks about 'rook lifts' and the "x-ray"; just a ton of essential chess knowledge in one book, seriously there is months or years worth of chess learning here depending upon your level of chess involvement...
Please do not under-estimate this book; this is a SERIOUS book, now in its SIXTH 'revised' edition. In fact most modern kids probably would not even be able to understand this book unless they are "chess players"...
This one book is simply the best introduction or refresher 'course' to the overall areas of chess knowledge, your chess development will speed along far faster if you consider this books' "contents" as you consider your chess 'moves'.
Again i must say this is THE chess book to OWN; it MUST be your first, second or third chess book to follow; now just buy it, or just ' find ' the time and money and " hire " your own personal chess ' coach ' instead...

A great book that covers a lot of material in a friendly way!

This book was recommended to me by NM Dan Heisman. I did not underestimate the "for kids" suffix to the title the second time in a row given that the last book I thought I was "too advanced" for was Bain's Chess Tactics. Big mistake ... I couldnt' solve all the problems under a few seconds each and that clearly brought to light what seperates the good tactical players from the ones who think they are good.

So I approached this book promising myself that I wouldn't skim pages even if the material was basic.

Boy, was I surprised!

This book certainly does not structure the lessons (Tactics, middle-game strategy, endings) in a set order, and while I initially thought it was too chaotic, I realized that if you're writing for kids, you certainly shouldn't worry. Kids (and certain adults like me) dislike monotony and I certainly wouldn't want an instructive book on chess to read like an academic text.

The hops in the "chess knowledge" between two consecutive lessons are sometimes wild and catches a lower-intermediate player (I'm a USCF 1500-rated adult at the time of writing this) off guard enough to warrant a serious read. For example , One lesson talks about the basics of a fianchetto, and you're skimming through it saying "yeah, I know this stuff" but you are stopped cold when you notice that the next one is a lesson on Pawn Rams/Levers that you seldom find in instructional material directed at kids!

Cartoony-illustrations and a fairly ticklish sense of humor do help the material get across and there are tons of tactical exercises that one can use for practice.

On the whole, I'd recommend this book to anybody who makes the mistake of rushing into advanced texts (My System, Reassess your chess) and feels lost at sea.

Any kid (even one who just started playing chess) who reads this book is going to start putting his rooks behind passed pawns, understand what opposite-colored bishops mean in endgames and reach Lucena/Philidor positions and a whole lot more!

While Coakley's book doesn't give you a means to instantly make your chess better, it instead provides a checklist to make sure that you haven't missed out anything fundamental, which IMHO is the most horrific mistake any aspiring tournament player could make.

Not Really for Kids

The only thing about this book "for kids" is the simple verbal explanations and the somewhat random, yet logically progressive, organization of the material. Neither of these issues is a drawback for the adult student; and the simple language is, in fact, welcome in a book that covers such a technical subject as chess strategy. Coakley mixes tactical exercises (typically nine to a page, preceded by three sample exercises for practice) with essays on strategic concepts, along with little vignettes about chess culture. Each section is one to five pages in length. The following are the specific types of sections in the book:

Essays on Strategy (labeled as 'Kiril's Class')

These are 3-6 page essays on strategic concepts, which range from basic understandings like 'rooks belong behind passed pawns', to more advanced topics like 'attacking the castled king's position' and 'pawn play'. Some of these topics are found hidden in other more advanced books like Pawn Power in Chess or Art of Attack in Chess, so kids getting exposed to them in their first book on chess strategy can only be a good thing. Coakley doesn't get bogged down with variations or oversimplify. Some of the more advanced strategic essays even build on tactics exercises given earlier in the book. In this sense, the book is structured well, despite its seemingly random organization.

Tactics Exercises (labeled 'Combo Mombo' and 'Tactics 101'):

Coakley gives a brief explanation of a tactical motif (all are included) and then follows up with three practice exercises and nine "test" exercises.

Chess Lingo:

Here Coakley discusses specific strategic topics and nomenclature, like "zugzwang," "square of the pawn," or "en passant." These sections are mixed with small vignettes about chess culture and tournament manners.

For the stronger player, this books could serve as a nice refresher course in basic chess strategy. The book is complete in its scope and treats sophisticated material in a straightforward way. For the beginner, the book is an excellent introduction to chess strategy, because it ramps-up the technical material in an appropriate manner and includes many topics not covered in less ambitious texts for kids.

About the Author
George Washington was born in Virginia in 1732. As a young man, he learned the morals, manners, and knowledge necessary to become a Virginia gentleman. He was particularly interested in the military arts and western expansion. At the age of 16, he helped survey Shenandoah lands. At the age of 22, he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel and fought in the first battles of what became the French and Indian War. Unanimously elected as the first President of the United States, Washington served two terms before retiring to Mount Vernon. He passed away on December 14, 1799.

On the Way to Civility & Decent Behavior

This work is a bit "dated" due to the style of writing and speaking they had at the time, but none-the-less I think most of these lessons would be clear enough for most readers. Most of the lessons are just a few sentences in length. I was able to read it while I was having the dealer rotate my tires, and that took less than an hour! In my opinion, every child should have to read and be tested on this work! It offers general insight on manners and conduct in decent society, and gees do we need that in this country today! Although the writing style might be a bit dated, the concepts and lessons within it are as important as ever!

Buy this one, not that one

While helping my young niece with a homework project on George Washington, I mentioned that I owned this book. I had purchased it years ago at a gift shop while on vacation. I fished it out and showed it to her and she liked it so I decided to get a copy for her birthday. I looked it up and bookmarked it but it when it came time to purchase it I began reading reviews about all the left-wing diatribes that had been added as commentary. I avoided that version (which looks identical on the cover) and sought out this one. I can attest that it is the same as the version I purchased years ago, with a nice introduction but otherwise free from any extraneous political commentary. It's a small book but it's sturdy, with very nice printing, good quality paper, and nice typesetting. Recommended.

FABULOUS EXPEDITION INTO THE ROOTS OF OUR CUSTOMS!

I found this book on my trip to Philadelphia, and bought it as a souvenir (unfortunatately, it was later stolen). I was terrifically pleased to find RULES that I have just always known (you don't do this, you don't do that), but which people from other cultures don't know (I teach English to foreigners), and they ask "Why?" or "where is it written?" With George Washington's Rules, I can just point to the rule, and say "lookee here!" na na na na na! I love love love this book! Since my first one was stolen, I am going to pretend that this is my souvenir from Philadelphia, and I am going to carry it with me each time that I leave my classroom.
It is also fun to see what manners have become outdated simply because our society has advance - we no longer need to heed the advice to "not pick lice, ticks, or fleas" off our person when in company - fortunately!

As I understand it, George Washington translated these rules, as a homework assignment, from French. Now that's interesting - back then, the French had the same rules for good manners that we continue to have. Who'd've thunk it? The French I meet do not seem to understand what we think is polite - sometimes to a frightening degree.

I loved this book so much when I had it, that, once it occurred to me that it might be on Amazon, I just had to get it!

Kindergarten-Grade 2 Tacky the Penguin is a total nonconformist who lives with a group of formal, proper penguins. But it is Tacky who foils the plans of three critters with ``get-rich-quick plans'' that threaten the penguins' existence. With his un-penguin-like antics, Tacky puzzles the hunters to such an extent that they're firmly convinced they cannot be in the ``land of the pretty penguins.'' This is a rollicking tale that clearly shows that there are ad vantages to being an individual. Mun singer cheerfully captures the mood of the tale with her whimsical, full-color illustrations that are particularly strong in depicting the hunters' deter mined, then befuddled, expressions and Tacky's madcap antics. ~~ Tacky is unique and happy to be so ~~

Tee Hee! Tacky the penguin is an oddball or at least that is what his penguin friends Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly and Perfect think! Why? Well let's see... Tacky doesn't greet them quietly and politely, he doesn't march in time, he can't dive gracefully and you should hear him sing! One day however, the hunters arrived. What do all the other penguins do? Hide! What does Tacky do?

A truly delightful story reinforcing the fact to young children that it is alright to be different and in fact being different can, at times, have a distinct advantage. I am not advocating bad manners here nor do I think the author is either. Balance is everything but children do not have to all be the same nor do they all need to follow the crowd. Individuality is the key. This book was on our son's second grade "Suggested Reading List" so I purchased this USED from Amazon. I was not required to do a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Tacky the Penguin is a lesson in itself

Being a teacher,Tacky is great book to read to children to develop understanding of human character traits. Not only can children identify the differences between the penguins and Tacky, they can also begin to consider reasons for giving those traits to the characters. Is it our prejudices, experiences, or innate feelings that create reasons for liking, disliking,making fun of, or championing? The children move into more depth and complexity as they explore the reasons for their feelings. Tacky is one of those books whose characters lend themselves to learning more about oneself and others.
