25,550 Ball Bearings!

Before you can lead and coach others, says Steve Brown, you must learn how to lead yourself. So what would that look like? Steve enlightens us with eight memorable insights in this terrific book.

It’s packed with the practical—like “The Cycle of Grief” chart on page 51 and its antidote on page 53, “The Cycle of Grace.” It’s original—know anyone who hangs a poster copy of Rembrandt’s “The Prodigal” by their front door? And—it’s inspirational.

I made a ton of inspirational notes that I planned to share with you, but then I read Chapter 8, and found the big idea for me (and maybe you). Read this excerpt and you’ll be telling this story to family and friends all year!

EXCERPTED FROM CHAPTER 8: STEWARDSHIP AND SHALOM

“Teach me to number my days aright so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

Steve Brown writes:

People sometimes do strange things. After my first residential session as a participant in the Arrow Leadership Program, my roommate went home and made a very strange purchase. He bought 25,550 ball bearings.

The natural question is, why? Why would anyone buy 25,550 ball bearings? Well, there is a method to what may seem like my roommate’s madness. The answer is profound. During that first Arrow residential session, my roommate had a transformational experience. He was deeply moved by the needs in the world. He was also awed by God’s particular call on his life to be part of his mission in this chapter of history. Finally, he was convicted that God wants everyone to carefully steward their limited time on this earth.

His prayer was the same as the psalmist’s in Psalm 90:12: “Teach me to number my days aright so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.”

So, when my roommate got back home, he took the psalmist’s prayer literally. He wanted to number his days aright. To do so, he did some basic math. He estimated his lifespan to be 70 years and multiplied 70 years x 365 days. This comes out to 25,550 days of life.

Although my roommate knew that this timeframe wasn’t guaranteed and that his days are ultimately held in God’s hands, he was still moved by this research. He wanted to brainstorm creative ways to tangibly and visually mark this precious and finite amount of time. So, he purchased 25,550 ball bearings. With each ball bearing representing a day of his life, he counted out all the days he had already lived.

Then he put the ball bearings representing days already lived into a large jar. The rest of the ball bearings were put in another jar that represented days not yet lived. Then he began a morning ritual.

Every morning he would go over to the jar of days not yet lived, pick out one ball bearing and place it in his pocket. This one ball bearing was a tangible reminder of his responsibility to steward each day that God gives him on this earth.

At the end of each day, he completed the ritual. He would take the ball bearing out of his pocket and place it in the jar representing completed days. It served as a visual reminder that each day given is a gift and resource to steward for God’s glory. Once a day is gone, it is gone forever.

My Arrow roommate eventually stopped this ritual, but he recently told me that the jars still sit on his shelf as a visual reminder.

This story has had a profound effect on my life. We ultimately don’t know how many days we have in this life. Today could be the last one. Maybe there are thousands left. Whatever the number, this story is a vivid reminder that we are called to be stewards of this special gift of time.

Brown continues, “The concept of stewardship is clear in Scripture. God has entrusted everyone and particularly Christian leaders with many resources—time, talent and treasure being just three. Our job is to recognize this trust as well as to seek to care for and invest these resources for God’s glory.

“As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 4:2, ‘Now, it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.’ In other words, leading yourself well means being a steward of the trust given to you. This trust is magnified for Christian leaders who are given opportunities to leverage not only their own talents but also the talents given to others.

“When I put the ball bearing illustration together with these stewardship verses, I am both convicted and inspired to wisely invest the gift of time entrusted to me. I am overwhelmed by the truth that God invites us to be part of his work and purposes. For these reasons, one of the key elements of leading ourselves is stewarding our time.”

Practical wisdom for Christian living

A great resource for personal growth and daily challenges! Steve's practices have also been beneficial as I introduce and demonstrate them to those I am leading as well. The reflections questions at the end of chapter allows for the leader to go home and continue to challenge themselves towards greatness! A necessary resource for those who know the challenge of continual growth in a relationship with Jesus and desire more for themselves and for others!

But along the way they experienced the kindness of many strangers and saw some of the greatest sights the world has to offer, finally making it safely home two years after they had set out. This, half a century on, is Jeanne’s enthralling account of the round-the-world adventure which at the time was simply swept under the carpet.

knowing the author and Jane, who is my sister, I've every expectation of a fantastic read because I've read all the sequals while it was being written. Everything is completely authentic. It's a book you can't put down.

A great adventure yarn for a winter's evening.

This is a true adventure at a time when there was no drug trafficking and people in every country respected each other and their cultures - or that is how the world appeared to me as we drove, worked, talked with, ate with, stayed with and enjoyed the experience. I can vouch for that as I was the co-driver - until I crashed the Mini - and became the navigator, etc. Two girls in our twenties we survived and remain good friends. Jeanne did a good job of recording it all.

A great travel read

This travel book has it all, read it you won't be disappointed. Jeanne is a born writer and tells her travel tale with wonderful descriptions that will entice readers to explore these places and bring back memories to those who travelled in the sixties; no mobile phones, ATM's or credit cards and minimum money. A great read.

About the Author

Roger Williams was born in 1940. Aircraft were his first love, so, after school, he joined the de Havilland Aircraft Company where he quickly added motor cars to his list of prime interests.  He completed his apprenticeship & studies & built two Ford-based  "specials" before family & career interests took pride of place for many years. However, in 1986 he started his own consultancy business, which allowed him to restore numerous MGBs, a Triumph TR6 & a Triumph Stag & to write three MGB books. He retired in 2000 & has since moved to France and written four Triumph TR restoration books. Roger has installed Rover V8 engines in two of his own MGBs.

The fourth edition is very much worth the money. ...

The fourth edition is very much worth the money. The pictures are in color now and there is quite a bit of new material. For example, Williams talks about installing the small block Chevy and Ford engines as well as the traditional Buick Olds Pontiac Rover aluminum V8s. I have the second edition of the book and wondered if it was going to be worth it to get the more recent edition. It took me about a minute after I got the fourth edition to come to the conclusion I stated above.

The HONY you've come to know and love!

While Brandon's first release was an excellent book of photography, it lacked many of the stories behind the individuals. I came to find HONY on facebook and feel the story behind the photo is half the experience. With his newest release, it all comes together to give you the full HONY package that most people have come to know and love. This book is a bargain for all the passion and work that Brandon puts into this project.

If you are deciding on whether or not to buy the book, consider the following, which Brandon posted on the HONY facebook page: "I want to take a quick opportunity to remind everyone that HONY is advertisement free and almost entirely financed by book sales. (The only exception being income from a handful of speeches I give every year.) Proceeds from books have been used to pay for trips to twenty different countries over the past year alone. Even when working with large organizations like the United Nations or UNHCR, I’m always very careful to cover all costs and reimburse any expenses. Expected more anecdotes

I hate to break the 5-star roll, but the honest truth is that the blog is better. I was super excited to have a curated set of Brandon's absolute best photos and quotes, but most do not include anecdotes and just say "Seen in _____". As a native New Yorker, I would also add that several neighborhoods were labeled incorrectly: a hot dog shop in Gowanus was wrongly labeled as Red Hook; a corner in Gramercy was labeled "Lower Midtown" (a term Brandon or his editor invented-- it is used neither on maps nor colloquially).

Furthermore, there are too many similar photos; there is a limit to how many times I can be captivated by women with half-shaven heads. He's also included a lot of low-quality photos that don't tell a story and are trying too hard to be aesthetic: a plain woman in a red coat against a red and white background for instance. These seem like earlier amateur works. They would be interesting to see on the blog as evidence of how the project has matured, but in a book where each page is precious real estate, these photos lack depth and feel like filler.

In the blog, oftentimes the quotes speak louder than the photos, and that is why I follow HONY. So I can meet the people of my city through his interviews. The stories humanize the subjects; they allow us to go beyond the surface of skin and cloth. But as I said, most of the photos in the book do not have those accompanying quotes. I find myself moved by a much, much larger percentage of photos on the blog than in this book. But I commend Brandon for making his book dream come true. I think the next edition will be better. Stick to the format of the blog! Photos and anecdotes and no filler! :)

A Laser-Beam of Empathy, Joy, Sadness, and Hope

This book. THIS BOOK. I've purchased all three Humans of New York books and have loved them all, but in Humans of New York - Stories, it all comes together. The photography is expressive, and the stories are equal parts soul-crushing and uplifting. The masterful way that Brandon interviews his subjects really shines through. I've followed Humans of New York for 4 years and am just in awe of it's revolutionary transformation and it's power to do good in this world. Even something went unspeakably wrong and against all odds the book was garbage (it isn't) you STILL should buy it, if for nothing more than to cast a vote of support for the JOY, LOVE, and EMPATHY that HONY provides. This is a voice of hope and kindness in a world that can occasionally strip you of both. In HONY there is no "Us vs. Them" - there's only WE and Brandon has shown us that together, WE can do anything.

Perfect title!

Jeremy Piper is unhappily married to a gold digger. His only passion is his writing and watching his favorite, celebrity crush Andre Jackson on his DVR.

Jeremy writes a movie and wants Andre to be the leading man. When he initially meets Andre, he finds him cold and distant. Not at all like the character he fell in love with.

While Jeremy is attending a party with friends, the topic of sex, pain and sub-space comes up and Andre tells Jeremy he can get him there. Since their first encounter didn't go so well, Jeremy has his guard up and turns him down. Andre pursues Jeremy and they soon begin a BDSM relationship.

FYI, there is a lot -- and I do mean a lot-- of spanking, whipping and such, which might be a bit much to read for some people.

Thank God for Baseball

I expected a review of the phenomenon of baseball in American culture. What I didn't expect was good scholarship and fine theological reflection! Both are there. The essays are wonderful and examine the parallels between Christianity and baseball from the perspectives of history, ethics, and hope. Read it before your next trip to the ball park!

Complicated but compelling

I wound up picking and choosing chapters of this book because often got lost in the theological issues. The chapters on Jackie Robinson and Rickey, Christy and Pete, and Shoeless Joe were very interesting. My own father was a young mill league player in 1919 and even though I was a "girl" he loved to share with me the stories of the glory days of the game. This book brought much of him back.

While I have always been a strong supporter of Title IX, I'm not sold on the interest among women to play professional baseball. Likely the WMBA among other pro groups are more compelling interests for our gender. Not really my call, but the ladies really did not convince me of the need for a pro ladies league.

Admittedly I had to make myself stick with the "Old Man and the Sea" along with the other theology based chapters, I just could not wrap my brain around some of the reasoning. No matter, I'm of the opinion that we do need to attempt to understand stuff that appears incomprehensible and challenging.

Now, let's get busy and get Shoeless Joe in the Hall of Fame. The book made a great rational case for righting a wrong.

A good book that did not quite meet all my expectations.

I read this book as I continue to develop my own theology of baseball. I enjoyed reading this book but wish it would have gone a little deeper. The author's main theological issue involves creating an inclusive kingdom which he compares with Jackie Robinson breaking through the color barrier in baseball. For a deeper theological connection, I suggest John Sexton's Baseball as a Road to God.
