About the Author
Dr. Marie E. Flatley is a Professor of Information and Decision Systems at San Diego State University, where she teaches various courses in business communication. Additionally, she has served as a Fellow at the university’s Center for Teaching and Learning and as a Qualcomm Fellow in the pICT (people, Information, Communication, and Technology) program. She received her B.B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. Dr. Flatley is active in numerous professional organizations, including the Association for Business Communication, the California Business Education Association, Delta Pi Epsilon, and the National Business Education Association. She has served as president of the Association for Business Communication and is a distinguished member of the Association. The California Business Education Association recently named her Business Educator of the year for the senior college/university level. Additionally, she has served as an editorial board member for the Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, associate editor for the Journal of Business Communication and editor for the NABTE Review. Currently she is a reviewer and member of the editorial review board for the Journal of Education for Business. Her current research interests involve using technology to assist with the communication process. Her research spans the investigation of the effective use of blogs to making good channel choices to using video email and various wireless technologies.

Dr. Kathryn Rentz is an Associate Professor in the English Department at the University of Cincinnati. She taught her first business writing class as a doctoral student at the University of Illinois in the early 1980s and has been teaching workplace writing ever since. She helped establish the University of Cincinnati’s professional writing program and has served as its coordinator. She has also won the English Department’s teaching award, directed the department’s graduate program, and helped direct the composition program. Dr. Rentz’s affiliation with the Association for Business Communication goes back to her beginnings as a business writing teacher. Dr. Rentz was named the 2008 winner of the Association for Business Communication's (ABC’s) Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition, an article she co-authored in 2007 just won the association’s award for Outstanding Article in the Journal of Business Communication. She has performed many roles for the association, including serving on the board of directors, organizing a conference, and chairing the publications board. She served two terms as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Business Communication and was Interim Editor from 2000–2001, for which she won the Francis W. Weeks Award of Merit. Dr. Rentz has published articles and commentary on pedagogy, genre theory, narrative, and ethics in such journals as Business Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Business Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, and the Journal of Business and Technical Communication. She has participated in many professional meetings and seminars over the years and is always learning from her colleagues and her students.

Without the exercises, the book is no bargain

Marie Flatley's revision of her classic business communication textbook has much to recommend it -- price, first of all; it's lightweight and contains most of the content from earlier iterations of her text. However, for ME the most useful material for students to have IN THE TEXTBOOK IN THE CLASSROOM are the exercises and cases at the ends of the chapters. These provided wonderful, real-life practice for students to work on together, with me, aloud and in every possible way once the material in the chapters had been discussed. Having a few of these exercises available online is not the same thing at all.

Very poor editing - several graphics are without text/title and several parts of the main text are hidden by the figures

The content of the book may be OK, but the editing was a disaster (and this is the "revised edition"). Several parts of the content are just missing in this printed version.
On page 5, the title of the figure is missing (should be figure 1-1) as well as the explanatory text.
On page 38, the title of the figure is missing (should be figure 2-4) as well as the figure explanatory text and also a few lines of the main text.
On page 65, the title of the figure is missing (should be figure 3-13) as well as the explanatory text.
On page 79, the line of the title of figure 4-2 is missing and the first lines of the explanatory text is also missing.
On page 104, the figure is without title and without explanatory text and the figure also hides significant part of the main text.
On page 115, the title of the figure is missing (should be figure 5-12) as well as the explanatory text.

This selection of Orchestra Excerpts was highly recommended by my private teacher. Not only does include an abundance of excerpts, but it also provides a wonderful introduction to some of the most known pieces and composers.

Bruce Alberts received his PhD from Harvard University and is Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is the editor-in-chief of Science magazine. For 12 years he served as President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1993-2005).

Dennis Bray received his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is currently an active emeritus professor at University of Cambridge. In 2006 he was awarded the Microsoft European Science Award.

Karen Hopkin received her PhD in biochemistry from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is a science writer in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Alexander Johnson received his PhD from Harvard University and is Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology Graduate Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

Julian Lewis received his DPhil from the University of Oxford and is a Principal Scientist at the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK.

Martin Raff received his MD from McGill University and is at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology and Cell Biology Unit and in the Biology Department at University College London.

It is a book with pages, mass, and no batteries!!!!

I am currently renting this book from Amazon ( I think) and the experience is as follows:
Pros
1. Exceptional readability, for some reason the authors manage to keep your attention better than most texts, especially since it is cell bio we are talking about.
2. Graphics are great and very helpful / clear. Instead of serving an almost purely aesthetic function like many texts, the figures summarize the "big picture" processes or subjects in a clear memorable manner
3. The book is not cheaply made and consists of durable hardback.
4. It's one of the few hard copy textbooks I get to use this semester so the away-from-computer time is much appreciated not to mention the lack of need to charge the book.

Cons
1. Heavy- Good or bad thing. For me I couldn't care less as I am just happy to be reading a physical book again (schools are really shifting towards poorly functioning, non-versatile, e-texts).
2. Though not having to do directly with the book content, I did not expect a brand new book to come by any means. However, the vast majority of the book is thoroughly highlighted. Evidently the previous user reads through the tip of a highlighter, of a rainbow of colors whose designation I have yet to determine. Every...single....word is highlighted as you might imagine this took some getting used to as text would shift from neon green to neon yellow to dark blue to pink and on. I'll re-update if they try to charge me for the highlighting massacre.

Great textbook, works fine as substitute for 4th edition.

The class I am taking supposedly requires the fourth edition of this book (according to our school bookstore website, that is). However, my professor told the class that the third and fourth editions are pretty much the same aside from some things like page and section numbering, and that we would be able to use either one for the class. If you are looking to save some money and still have basically the same book, then I would highly recommend this one. As far as how the book reads, it seems pretty good for a textbook. It isn't exactly fun to read, but it's relatively easy to follow and there are a lot of good pictures and diagrams. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and would definitely recommend this book.

Beware physical quality of the textbook

Two stars (being generous), not for content, as I never got that far. The quality of the textbook paper and the printing is abysmal. Garland Science should really be embarrassed, especially for the price being charged for a new copy of the text. With most expensive textbooks, one can at least count on excellent stock paper and crisp printing. This book looks and feels like it's been printed on newsprint. Also, Amazon's poor quality packaging assured that the "new" book would arrive with a scuffed cover, damaged corners and half-broken spine.

Fascination with elements

Although I have some formal chemistry training, I am not a professional chemist, nor teacher. However, since childhood I have been fascinated by the chemical elements. I suppose this is similar to the fascination for prime numbers, Platonic solids, or elementary particles.
I suspect there are many others "out there" sharing this fascination. If so, and you are interested in any of the following, this book might be for you:
1) why are most elements metals? 2) why are there so few liquid elements? 3) why are there no gaseous metals? (Well actually there is: hydrogen) 4) why is there an island of super-dense elements centered about osmium? 5) why is carbon unique in that it is the progenitor of a vast family of compounds (the subject of organic chemistry)? 6) why do carbon's two nearest neighbors, silicon and boron, not have similar empires? (Silicon does have an empire -- rocks! -- but it is obviously quite different)7) what makes "heavy metals" heavy, and why are they so toxic? 8) why is there virtually no technetium in the Earth, though it is a relatively light metal, and not a member of the "heavy" radio-active series? 9) why is deuterium virtually a distinct elements (rather than just a form {isotope} of hydrogen)?
The book is "friendly" enough so as not to intimidate non-specialist, but at the same time it contains sufficient details and technical information to interest the expert. A special asset is the grouping of elements according to the periodic table. The mysteries of the transitions elements are especially well covered.
The book is enhaced by excellent graphics.
The price, while high for say a novel, it quite reasonable for a technical book.

Great suggestions

When I was listening to the beginning of this book on tape - my thoughts were - this is nothing new, I've heard all of this before. But that changed as I got further into it. I've read a lot about public speaking and I assist in teaching High Impact Presentation courses for the Dale Carnegie organization, so I've heard a lot of advice on giving presentations. This book on tape was definitely worth my time and I've recommended it to others.

I respectfully disagree with the other reviewer. I felt the reader's voice was precise, professional, and memorable. No, it is not the tone you hear in everyday speech. It is a much more formal tone. I find myself remembering pieces of the audiobook long after hearing it by simply thinking of the man's voice. The book was filled with valuable material and I hope you'll give it a listen.

The colored-pencil illustrations are similar in style to Jan Brett's work, including borders and decorative detail, but with a pastel palette; a lighter, sketchier line; and more sense of movement. The blues, tans, and reds effectively evoke the setting, as do the details such as carved, decorated furniture; painted pottery; and embroidered and appliqued clothing. The borders extend the illustrations by depicting the farm, mountains, bewreathed horses, and trolls in pugnacious postures. A Wonderful Book

My heritage is 100% Swedish. It is difficult for me to find books about Swedish culture in general, and close to impossible to find Swedish stories to which my seven-year old son can relate.
I believe each cultural has its own beauty and much to offer the world. I often encounter people assuming that because we speak English and are Lutheran, then our cultural heritage is the same as Britain's (we're are not Anglo-Saxons, the Church of England has nothing to do with Scandinavia, and our native tongue is Swedish) or since Swedish is a Germanic language, then our culture must be like the Germans'. Like every other society that has evolved on its own, the Swedes are proud of who they are and how they came to be.
I remember Dala horses all over my grandparents' homes and in my house growing up as well. I want very much for my son to enjoy the richness of where his family comes from, and why we still remain so close to our relatives in "the old country." This is simply a wonderful book that has aided in giving my son his own cultural identity.
I am very grateful that this book is so Swedish. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for new perspectives about the smaller European nations.

One of my son's favorites

This book so captured our imaginations that I had to purchase a little wooden Dala horse for our son. The artwork is beautiful, the story is culturally sensitive, the scenes are exciting and the language is rich. I've been reading this book to my son since he was two. He's four, now, and still loves it!
