Definitely worth the read...

As a disclaimer, I am a partner in a retained executive search firm, and after reading Purple Squirrel, I felt like I knew just about everything discussed in this book and I felt that it is more directed to the entry - middle level candidates. That being said, for someone who is at the entry - middle level management stage in their career and looking to distinguish themselves amongst their peers, this book is quite helpful.

Unlike another review I read about this book, I appreciated the narrative and found it easy to read and well delivered.

Will this book find you your next position/career? Yes and No; information is only as good as you make it. This book will help you find your next position if you actually put in the work, implement what is taught and go after it. If you read it and then don't put the effort in that it takes to stand out, then you won't.

I enjoyed the book and believe it is a good guide to finding that next position.

Rehash of other job huntng books ... Get 2hr Job Search Instead.

I read the WHOLE thing ... and no real advice for getting jobs. The author breaks down searching into two parts. Things to help you PURSUE a job (the way most job seekers look for work) and GETTING PURSUED (what to do to stand out).

Like the title implied, I was hoping for more of the latter. However, by the page count, 11% of the book is about motivation, 73% is about traditional resumes/job searching. Leaving only 26% about ways to stand out. However, these pages are short stories about successful job seekers using two strategies: Use LinkedIn, Have a presentation portfolio with work samples to prove you can do the job (present from it during the interview).

Really, "The 2-Hour Job Search: Using Technology to Get the Right Job Faster" is a much better book with a proven strategy.

How to get the jobs coming to you!

Employed? Unhappy with your current role or company? Career stalled? Read "Purple Squirrel."

According to Manpower, the largest staffing firm in the world, there are 80 million unhappy employed people who would love to have a new career opportunity. All most people know to do in regard to a "job search" is to (1) network; (2) fire off r�sum� after r�sum� to online postings on the Internet; and then (3) hope!

Mike, with his powerful experience as both a 3rd party recruiter and as a member of the Google executive recruiting team, shows you there is a better way!

But first, what on earth is a "purple squirrel" anyway? In "headhunting" circles we use the term "purple squirrel" to define a candidate who must meet a very narrowly defined set of criteria to be considered for a hiring company's job opening. In fact, the criteria established by the hiring company is usually so narrowly defined that it's nearly impossible to find a candidate who actually meets the job criteria!

So what does this have to do with you? In a word, everything!

During his illustrious career, Mike has read thousands of r�sum�s, interviewed hundreds and hundreds of people and has dissected what separates the top 25% of the talent pool from all of the rest.

"Most job seekers spend (countless) hours hunting for work and are lucky to receive even a handful of responses from interested employers," Mike explains in his book. "Others update a few online profiles and magically the phone starts ringing."

About half of Purple Squirrel addresses the tactics for finding a job now. The book contains a plethora of proven executables and deliverables that, if implemented properly, will not only allow you to "up your game," it will also enable you to stand out from the crowd, land interviews and get hired far more quickly than most. The remaining half of the book is for those of you who may be suffering the "Sunday night blues," i.e., dreading the arrival of Monday mornings when you're in a job you have come to loathe, and want to explore other career opportunities. Mike literally walks you, the reader, through the process of what it takes to become what he calls an "opportunity magnet."

"The real purpose of this book," he says, "is to guide you to the point where you can stop being a job seeker and start being a sought-after resource."

In other words, Mike shows you how to position yourself as the elusive "purple squirrel," how to brand yourself as someone within the talent pool who is--or can become!--a highly-sought-after, quite rare species.

Full of Suspense

The Forbidden Tomb is the second in The Hunters series to feature an elite group comprising Jack, leader, ex major in the US Army; Sarah, CIA trained spy and security expert; Jasmine, Academic and Historian; Josh, ex marine, sniper and weapons expert and Hector the Hacker. All experts in their field and all willing to do what it takes to locate their goal -- the Tomb of Alexander the Great -- one of the most brilliant military minds in history.

The group have an ancient map which they believe can guide them to the whereabouts of the tomb in Alexandria and this is where they start their exploits.

As the story unfolds the group realise that some people will do anything to stop them from discovering the tomb, whether they have to kill one person or hundreds, they don't care.

The book features reams of historical facts about Alexandria, Egypt and Alexander, some of which did drag on a bit but, in some ways, it was essential to the story to know these details.

There was little depth to the characters apart from one of them.

The story had all you would expect from an adventure novel, ancient mysteries, violent deaths, underground tunnels, lies and deceit, psychopaths, explosions, violence, shocks and twists.

Action-packed!!

Chris Kuzneski has written another action-packed, fast-paced treasure hunting thriller that will keep you reading all night. There was one moment that I didn't see coming, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but needless to say, it was a surprise. The epilogue really makes you wonder what the heck is really going on.

A great read and I look forward to the further adventures of The Hunters, and am excited to see where they end up.

This is where he came across Zabbix and the technical and administrative flexibility that it offered. With this as a launch pad, Andrea was inspired to develop Orabbix, the first piece of open source software to monitor Oracle that is completely integrated with Zabbix. He has published a number of articles on Zabbix-related software, such as DBforBIX. His projects are publicly available on his website at http://www.smartmarmot.com. Currently, Andrea is working as a senior architect for a leading global investment bank in a very diverse and challenging environment. His involvement is very wide ranging, and he deals with many critical aspects of the Unix/Linux platforms and pays due diligence to the many different types of third-party software that are strategically aligned to the bank's technical roadmap. Andrea also plays a critical role within the extended management team for the security awareness of the bank, dealing with disciplines such as security, secrecy, standardization, auditing, regulator requirements, and security-oriented solutions. My name is Grigory, and I am one of the reviewers of the book. This book is written for everyone, but you have to have a little bit of knowledge of Linux system administration and scripting.

During my work on the book with Andrea, I gathered a lot of information and I think many readers would benefit from reading it. It contains a lot of nuances, which one could gather only through his or her own experiences, through trial and error. The author shares this knowledge with everyone so you could take advantage of modern Zabbix usage.
Besides this, you will know how to configure a high availability and failover monitoring infrastructure: clustering database (PostgreSql), mirroring block devices with LVM and DRBD, and using Pacemaker. And of course, you could use the knowledge beyond Zabbix, for example, to configure your application server.
I would recommend this book for system administrators and DevOps, who are concerned about their infrastructure and would like to use modern technologies in their work (for example, sending notifications to WhatsApp messenger).

Engaging chapter books for young girls, ages 6-9

The Ivy and Bean series of books will appeal to girls ages 6-9. My daughter loves the central characters, Bean and her best friend Ivy. The girls are precocious, intelligent, and always up to some adventure (or misadventure, depending on how one looks at it!). The chapters are relatively short, which make it easy for her to read independently. The books average about 100-120 pages, and she manages to read up to 40 pages per sitting (around 45 minutes).

What I found to be fascinating was that the plot for each story is so well-written and developed that my daughter could not stop once she started reading! I usually sit with her and supervise her reading, helping out with some difficult words, and she gets so involved with the story that she just keeps on reading. This to me is the mark of a good book, one that entices a young reader to keep reading. The language is not dumbed down, on the contrary, there are some challenging words which I help my daughter with (pronunciation and definition, if necessary).

The black and white illustrations by Sophie Blacksall that appear in each chapter add to the appeal of these books. This boxed set contains books 1-8, and focuses on the friendship and adventures of two seven-year-old girls Ivy and Bean who live in the same neighborhood. Initially, Bean (who has short dark hair) does not care to play with Ivy (who has red hair), but an unusual 'meeting' results in the beginning of a lovely and fun friendship!

The second book, Ivy and Bean And the Ghost that Had to Go, and the third book, Ivy and Bean Break The Fossil Record also contain engaging plots. The black and white illustrations which are abundant throughout the books kept my young daughter who is a visual learner eager to read on to discover what happens in the story.

In the fourth installment, "Ivy and Bean Take Care of the Babysitter", Bean is horrified when her parents decide to allow Nancy, Bean's older sister (and nemesis) to babysit Bean while her parents attend a play. In the fifth title in the series, "Ivy and Bean Bound to Be Bad", Ivy, inspired by the story of St. Francis thinks it would be cool to be so pure of heart and help neighborhood bully Matt to become good. Of course, things never always go as intended in the world of Ivy and Bean.

In Book 6, Ivy and Bean Doomed to Dance, Ivy and Bean are initially excited about being in a ballet. To their horror, they find out their teacher has cast them in roles they find embarrassing! How are they to get out of this? The story is funny and will have little ones in stitches. My young daughter was laughing most of the time as she read this.

In Book Seven, Ivy and Bean What's the Big Idea, the girls are informed by their teacher, Ms. Aruba-Tate that there is to be a science fair at their school. The theme is global warming, and the children in the class are told to come up with interesting projects. Of course, Ivy and Bean are raring to go and devise all sorts of strange and interesting experiments, but nothing seems to work. The girls do eventually come up with a unique project that will warm readers' hearts!

In the eighth installment, Ivy and Bean No News is Good News, Ivy and Bean are envious of their classmates who all appear to have the coveted ball of cheese in the red wax packaging. The children use the piece of wax to make all sorts of things like 'boogers', mustaches, etc. When Bean's mom refuses to buy the cheese because it is too expensive, the girls devise a scheme to earn money on their own so that they can buy the cheese themselves. Their half-baked schemes are so creative and funny that I could not help laughing as my daughter read the story out loud night after night. What will the girls think of next and will it work?

This series is perfect for young readers who are attaining fluency as independent readers and the sentences are just the right length to encourage and stimulate young readers' motivation to read. Highly recommended!

I got the set for my daughter who just turned 6. When it came, she started to read the first book all on her own. She loves it and is reading book 2 right now.
Great hardcover books with big, easy to read prints and nice illustrations.
I was lucky and got the whole set for $13.xx. Don't think I'd pay $99 for the set though.

Lovely friends to lovers romance!

Accidental Bride is the third in the Beaufort Brides series, about a trio of sisters and their very eccentric grandmother. It's finally Kelly's turn, the last one to still be living with her grandmother and the youngest of the Beauforts. She's pretty much resigned to her single state and hasn't thought too much of the future and her own wishes. That all changes when she heads to Las Vegas for a wedding with her best friend Peter. One night of drunken revelry, and somehow they've ended up married to each other! Pretending to be blissfully in love for a few weeks before quietly seeking an annulment is the plan, but now that Peter's finally got a chance to show Kelly his real feelings about her, he's not going to give her up so easily.

I quite enjoyed this story of two people who finally make the transition from friends to lovers. Though Kelly has cut off any possible romantic thoughts of Peter for years, he hasn't, and when they marry he honestly believes Kelly wanted it too, and not that she wouldn't remember it! I really loved seeing both points of view in the story. Peter works slowly but surely to convince Kelly that it's actually a good thing that they got married, and that she can count on him for more than just friendship. Kelly is rather blown away by the whole thing, and truthfully quite scared of change. But she is starting to see Peter in a whole new light, which is rather disconcerting for her. Their tentative steps toward intimacy result in realistic lovemaking as they decide that they might as well enjoy the fruits of their temporary marriage. It's a sweet and sensual love story, with some good hints as to the next series that will revolve around this setting. 4 stars.

Minor flaws, but absolutely awesome romantic read!

This was a great ending to a the trilogy. I love the writing style and enjoyed the other two books. Other reviews have hashed out the content, but I want to add this. The large majority of romance novels rub me the wrong way because they are beyond belief. Normal people don't fall into bed and then trade wedding vows. I think what I loved most about this book is that there is a backstory between Peter and Kelly. Their love did not just happen, it's been happening and they're just now figuring it out.

One hundred percent honesty. This is a five star book content wise. It is just not edited as well as the others in the series. There are places where his was used when it obviously should have been hers and other similar situations throughout the book. It will only take away from the story if you are (a) a grammar obsessed picky person or (b) you are missing half a brain. It's obvious what should be there so move on.

Overall Noelle Adams is a great author. This was the first series of hers that I have read and now I can't wait to get the rest of her books!

Very Average

I'm all for a friends to lovers romance and was really looking forward to this one. Again like with book 1 in this series, the author did a mediocre job in delivering the hea. I actually have to say that the h annoyed me throughout the book because she kept saying that they couldn't be together. I felt like the H did all the work in this one by arranging honeymoon weekends and he tried to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately the h doesn't respond very well. I'm glad that Ms Adams is done with this series because I'm not sure I can take the stuffed cats anymore.

About the Author

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse (Khyentse Norbu) is a Tibetan Buddhist lama who travels and teaches internationally and is also an award-winning filmmaker. He is the abbot of several monasteries in Asia and the spiritual director of meditation centers in Vancouver, San Francisco, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Taipei. He is also head of a Buddhist organization called Siddhartha’s Intent.

Lively, thought-provoking, and profound

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche has accomplished quite a coup: a text on the Ngondro preliminaries that simultaneously brings the Ngondro overachiever down to earth, provides a swift quick in the bum for the Ngondro slacker, and fosters greater enthusiasm and understanding in those already in the thick of the practices. The book is strong on context and the visceral, lived experience of the practices, less so on the detail, which Rinpoche repeatedly suggests is best to obtain directly from a teacher. The practice descriptions present the Longchen Nyingthig preliminary practices of the Nyingma lineage, and are quite sufficient to lay out the mechanics, particularly if accompanied by more specific commentary for those who want to pin down intricate points. The context and background explanations, however, apply to any Ngondro--indeed to any Tibetan Buddhist practice.

More importantly, the text provides insight and straight-to-the-heart purpose for engaging in the practices themselves. Rinpoche speaks with one foot solidly grounded in the traditional theory and methodology of practice, another in an open and kind understanding of practical challenges modern practitioners face. He is a recognized incarnation of a great Tibetan master, yet is thoroughly modern in his approach and life (he is also well known as the film maker behind "The Cup" and "Travelers and Magicians.") The combination of tradition and modernity provides for a vivid description of the meaning behind the practices, and a lively approach to actively encountering it in our own experience. The English editing is superb--the language is elegant, fluid, and rich without getting in the way of the substance.

As a Kagyu practitioner who remains an active fan after having completed one Mahamudra Ngondro, I found much to carry into my ongoing practice at all levels. As a student and translator of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy in traditional monasteries in Nepal and India, I recognized the scholarly vein of the monastic training in Rinpoche's delivery. Rinpoche peppers the text with seminal and relevant quotes and advice from genuine teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly the Nyingma and Kagyu schools emphasizing the Ngondro as a foundational practice. The result is a text inlaid with nuggets of practical wisdom available for the reader to mine, contemplate, and apply to their practice. Much food for thought on many levels, practical and profound. Rinpoche is particularly effective in demystifying the central role of devotion to all practice.

I would highly recommend this thoroughly engaging book to those who wish to bring their spiritual practice to life. Sound, pragmatic advice that will get you reflecting on your motivation and approach in positive ways throughout the day, and send you to the cushion with fresh and enlivening insight to fuel your practice of awakening. I, for one, foresee returning to its inspiring and grounding blessings again and again. May all beings develop and suffuse their mindstreams with genuine devotion and understanding, bringing it to the complete perfection of buddhahood for the sake of all that lives!

An excellent resource with a couple of caveats

I am enjoying the book, and also how the material is forthright and upfront. A lot of myths are disspelled, and as one reviewer said, this book is 'not for sissies.' You want to practice? here's how, and what to expect. No mumbo jumbo. And the reasoning behind all the visualizations is most helpful, especially to beginners, as is the explanation of bodhichitta. This would be a 5 star review but for one thing. Stating that "depression is laziness" is a disservice to those who have had to deal with it, those who are fighting it, a vast oversimplification, and moreover, a judgement hastily made. Depression is a combo of many things - brain chemistry, circumstance and history that a judgement of "laziness" dismisses and irresponsibly adds to suffering for those who may be experiencing and pick up this book. It is, moreover, a statement made in ignorance that perhaps the editors did a disservice in not catching. Otherwise, i have enjoyed the book and it has helped me view practice in new ways.

Searching for real happiness

If you are looking for "comfort food" do not buy this book! The author say in his introduction: if you want to feel happy go get a massage! This book is for buddhists that know how dangerous it is to be happy with yourself, to be satisfied with your life and with your religious path.This is not a good for one that wishes to fell good. On the other hand, if you want to enter the path of ego taming this is the right book for you. Taming the mind is a huge challenge and it is wonderful to have Dzongsar Rinpoche as a guide. It is a real blessing! Great book, not recommended for sissies! It is a book for the bold ones that have the courage to search their true nature, cut all illusions and be rewarded with real happiness - enlightenment!
