Dictionary of Scholastic Philosophy, by Bernard Wuellner

Everyone concerned with philosophy the college undergraduate just becoming initiated into the fascinating realm of metaphysical inquiry, the interested adult anxious to grapple with questions of fundamental importance, or the busy teacher seeking to whet his student s appetite for truth all will find this concise, reference book of the terms most commonly used by scholastic philosophers of remarkable value. Arranged in dictionary form, this work contains over 1,600 entries and subentries of scholastic terms and phrases, and includes in addition over thirty charts and diagrams providing salient information on such topics as the divisions of act and potency, the kinds of appetites, the categories of being, the types of law and their relations one to the other, the powers of man, and many others. Within an entry the sequence, in general, is as follows: term or phrase defined; its part of speech; its meaning; cross references to antonyms, synonyms, and related terms; abbreviation of the term; uses, particularly of adjectival terms; divisions of incidental terms and phrases using the main term; references; charts and diagrams. Preference is given to the definitions of terms as found in Aristotle and Saint Thomas, but abundant attention is given to important concepts of such thinkers as Scotus and Suarez. In addition, the author has cited references to the best of modern textbooks and to the pertinent works of prominent neo-scholastics, among them Maritain and Gilson. What renders the volume so valuable is the fact that it provides in compact form the important concepts common to scholastic thought. By giving clear-cut definitions it helps beginners avoid needless controversies and aids them to see the value of a particular philosopher s insight into reality. Particularly valuable for the ever growing number of individuals clamoring for the truth handed down through the philosophia perennis, Dictionary of Scholastic Philosophy will be appreciated as a basic reference work of prime importance, one which helps all students of philosophy see the relationships between the separate branches of philosophical inquiry and to appreciate the value of definitions as a requisite for the sound philosophical analysis of reality.

the material that is actually in the 2012 version is very good, and would undoubtedly be of great use to ...
By Thomas Hicks
I own both the 2012 paperback version, and the 1966 2nd edition hardcover. The 1966 version is 339 pages. The 2012 version is, with less words per page, 138 pages. The 2012 version has less than half the content, both taking out entire entries and severely shortening the entries left in. To be sure, the material that is actually in the 2012 version is very good, and would undoubtedly be of great use to a beginner in Scholastic Philosophy. The more serious student of Scholastic Philosophy however I would advise to spend the extra money on the 1966 2nd edition.

For example, "Be" in the 1966 version has two entries; the first entry has one part, the second entry has 25 parts.
"Be" in the 2012 version also has two entries; the first entry has one part, the second entry... has one part.

This is not mere trimming the fat. The 2012 version removes very valuable information to no obvious benefit to the reader. My only guess as to why this happened is that the 2012 version is a reprint of the 1st edition, not the 2nd. Why the publishers would choose to reprint the less complete version can only be left to speculation.

As advertised and very useful.
By Peter S. Bradley
As advertised, this book is a dictionary of scholastic philosophy. So, it contains an alphabetical listing of the strange words common to scholastic philosophy along with the familiar words used in the strange ways to which scholastic philosophy deploys those words, usages that long predate the modern usage. "Science," for example, is "the certain intellectual knowledge of something in its causes; universal, demonstrated, organized knowledge of facts and truths and reasons or the causes of these." It is useful to haul out the dictionary when you read St. Thomas talking about "science" or "scientific" knowledge as a reminder that he is not talking about modern "science" except by analogy.

I am in a group that has been reading through the Summa Theologica for the last 14 years. Last week, we were at Part 1 of Part II, question 67, article 2, which mentioned "possible intellect" as a key part of the answer. I am acquainted with "agent intellect," "active intellect" and "passive intellect" but "possible intellect" - was a moment that led to some head scratching as to the precise nuance of meaning that was being communicated. Fortunately, I had just received the Dictionary of Scholastic Philosophy, so I hauled it out and looked at the entry for "intellect" and - lo! - I read "passible intellect, possible intellect" - "the spiritual power of knowing or understanding." So, the power to understand, as opposed to actual understanding which is the "agent intellect" or "active intellect." I kind of thought so, but it was nice to have that confirmed.

There are also various charts that neatly outline the schema of various concepts, which is very useful.

Long story short, this is an essential bit of "kit" if you are going to tackle St. Thomas.

A Useful Resource
By Sky Light Mine
I highly recommend this book. It is fascinating and useful not only for anyone interested in scholastic or Thomistic terminology, but also for those interested in how a major school of Western thought understands and integrates key philosophical terms and concepts. It could also serve as a book to meditate with. It is refreshing to see the rigor to which thought can be put, yet without draining the vibrant life that animates it. Go for it!

The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea, by Paul Ryan

From the intellectual leader of the Republican party, an unvarnished look into the state of the conservative movement today and a clear plan for what needs to be done to save the American Idea.
THE WAY FORWARD challenges conventional thinking, outlines his political vision for 2014 and beyond, and shows how essential conservatism is for the future of our nation.

Beginning with a careful analysis of the 2012 election--including a look at the challenge the GOP had in reaching a majority of voters and the prevalence of identity politics--Ryan examines the state of the Republican party and dissects its challenges going forward.

THE WAY FORWARD also offers a detailed critique of not only President Obama but of the progressive movement as a whole--its genesis, its underlying beliefs and philosophies, and how its policies are steering the country to certain ruin.

Culminating in a plan for the future, THE WAY FORWARD argues that the Republican Party is and must remain a conservative party, emphasizing conservatism in a way that demonstrates how it can modernize and appeal to both our deepest concerns and highest ideals.

Getting Out of the Liberal Mud - Progressively
By Dr. David Steele
Several years ago, I set out to read about as many of the United States presidents as possible. Reading about the great leaders in America's history; leaders like George Washington, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan is an unforgettable experience that tends to leave a mark on each reader.

During this political season filled with failed policies and lackluster leadership, I set out to read about a few men who may one day occupy the Oval Office. The first book is written by the Vice Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan. His book, The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea is a transparent look at the Wisconsin native and his vision for America.

Readers will be impressed with Ryan's unassuming style. He's a small town boy with big dreams for America. There's no political pretense here; just well-thought out ideas that Ryan proposes in order to rescue our country from the clutches of the Obama administration.

Several reforms are proposed by Paul Ryan. The first proposal he presents is entitlement and health-care reform. The goal here, according to Ryan is to begin by repealing Obama care, the prized jewel of social progressives. Ryan makes it clear that he intends to save social security, medicare, and medicaid. But the current policies will, in the final analysis lead to economic disaster. Ryan proposes commonsense solutions which promote competition among insurance companies and doctors which will ultimately drive down prices; not to mention put more money back into the pocketbook of Americans.

The second proposal includes an economic growth component. Ryan addresses the growing national debt crisis which is over $17 trillion and rising. He addresses the liberal proclivity to tax and spend. Ryan adds, "The bottom line is that when you tax something , you get less of it. So when we tax prosperity and success, we get less of each - and we need more of both so we can get the economy working for everyone again."

Third, tax reform is on Ryan's agenda. He is in favor of a reduction of the corporate tax rate and argues in favor of a simpler tax code. Ryan's reforms would mean "that no business or family would pay more than 25 percent of their income to the federal government." And many Americans would pay considerable less under the Ryan plan.

Fourth, ending cronyism and corporate welfare. Ryan notes, "Cronyism is integral to the progressive approach to governing." A brief look at the Obama policies only confirm this notion. Ryan concludes, "Americans need to know that their government is on their side - encouraging robust competition that will best serve their interests and grow their economy - rather than on the side of big, established corporate players. Capitalism and cronyism are not compatible, and it's time Republicans made it much clear to voters that we are the party that stands for a competitive economy suitable for growth."

Fifth, Ryan makes a good case for regulatory reform. "Going forward," he writes, "we should ease the regulatory burden on the economy, and the best way to do that is to bring meaningful cost-benefit analysis back into the system, reconnect the law with the lawmakers, and restore the balance between the branches of the government. True regulatory reform can restart economic growth - and produce the energy we need."

Sixth, aggressive immigration reform should be a key plank in the GOP platform. Ryan's ideas are among the best I've read as a pathway for citizenship is offered and accountability required.

Seventh, sound monetary policy will guide our country into the future.

Finally, a twenty-first century national defense strategy and foreign policy. Ryan refers to this final component of his plan as the "missed opportunity" of the Obama administration. Moving forward will require a strong military and a foreign policy that builds bridges with our allies around the world.

There's something strangely refreshing about Paul Ryan's approach. Readers will notice that this man is devoted to his family and country. He just happens to be a politician. Here is a man who has strong gifts in the field of economics and understands how to apply a supply-side approach in the current climate. Paul Ryan is a strong leader with strong values and a heart for the American ideal. Whether he ever ends up in the Oval Office is anyone's guess. One thing is true: He knows the way forward.

By Juno
I expected this to be boring. It is the first book I have read regarding politics. I enjoyed it very much. This is real hope and change. Most believe we are on the wrong track, as a country. I like Ryan's ideas and positive attitude. He had a humble upbringing, is smart, down to earth and not afraid to make the tough calls so our children have a chance.
I realize there are biased reviews here, some will never like republican ideas and the same for democratic ideas. But here I see someone who can work across the aisle, which the current administration promised and then immediately proceeded to divide our country.

Worth several "reads"
By Lisa Corrente
Joey Johnson is so good at what he does and is a genuine person with a passion to truly help athletes become all they can be -- in other words, to become "Worthy to Win!" His own experience as a professional athlete, combined with his understanding of the complex process of becoming a more self-aware athlete/individual makes his program and this book a cut above the rest. He asks the tough questions and teaches players to look within themselves for answers. He is a compassionate listener and understands how difficult it is for athletes to become complete competitors. Joey teaches athletes that they can only become "worthy to win" after they become self-aware -- a necessity component for mental development in all aspects of life, but especially in sports. If an athlete is willing to commit to the process and willing to look within, Joey can help facilitate the journey. Joey also understands the importance of involving parents at appropriate levels in the developmental process, in order to gain additional insight and perspective. He's the real deal, and the book is worth several "reads."

Curses, Hexes & Crossing: A Magician's Guide to Execration Magick, by S. Connolly

Renowned Daemonolatress S. Connolly explores the taboo topic of Execration Magick from a unique "darker path" perspective. This book covers cursing from Ancient Egypt to modern times and gives the modern magician plenty to consider when it comes to cursing, hexing, and crossing enemies; as well as learning to break bad habits and curse bad situations. Also included is a section about protections, how to break curses, how to clear one's personal space of negativity, and simple methods for psychic self defense.

Much less content than I expected
By Kevin W
Pros:
~The author used a casual, conversational tone that I enjoyed. I laughed during the first few pages and I had good expectations

~Nice, convenient size for anyone who wants to carry it around

~Section on curses provides a decent quantity of spells from different traditions/cultures

Cons:
~Redundant: On page 7 she says, "banishing, exorcism, and dispelling negativity are all, also, technically forms of execration as a dear friend pointed out." On page 16, a mere 9 pages later, she says "Yes-- even banishing and exorcisms are technically a form of execration magick"

~Little-to-no elaboration on theories to really get a feel of what the author is discussing: Yes we are all free to build our own theories, but sometimes it's nice to get another witch's viewpoint. She just drops an opinion but doesn't really elaborate or provide much detail.

~A little too "convenient" of a size: the book is a total of 142 pages...already a pretty paltry offering. 100 of those pages are curses, 42 of those pages are the preceding text. As a witch who's been practicing for over 10 years this didn't faze me much because I have already read many texts and other witches' works and have already got a nice understanding of many aspects of many magical traditions. However, in comparison to other books, like Jason Miller's Protection and Reversal Magick, which to this day is one of my favorite witchcraft books, this book is extremely bare bones. Her chapters on history of cursing and different cultural examples of cursing are practically nonexistent and lack citations and interesting specific material that the reader might want to review further in other texts. She just mentions WAY too many things in passing.

~Vague: She says things like, "To bind the tongues of those who would bear false witness against you, you would mix magical herbs and pour them over a cow's tongue" Okay, well which herbs...there's a lot of herbs on this Earth, are there any particularly notable for this purpose. Again, as a witch who's practiced for awhile, I've reached the part of my path where I know intent and energy are the most important parts of the magical ritual but I also know that in many magical traditions there is shared knowledge where practitioners will share recipes and things they've found successful. Also, I know that some ingredients have certain "vibrations" (for lack of a better term) that provide the element a witch is looking for in a spell. For each witch, that energetic wavelength that ingredient emits to the witch will be different for each witch but still, if you're going to provide recipes or talk about something specific, be specific about which ingredients you have read are useful or common.

My overarching review of this is that there just isn't enough material, enough history, enough insight, enough reference to traditions and cultures to call this a "guide to execration magick [sic]".

Shoot, I give it 5 stars for Guts where others just Whine and Whimper
By Gonzo
I like this book because the subject is rare. Good for you Connolly, or whoever you are.

You gotta love a book (and it's author) that boldy uses "The Word Of God" to curse on one page and then a few pages later, making an appeal to Satan to do the same. Double Whammy, nobody is safe.

Alot of people are making a big to-do about skimpy content. It's a G-U-I-D-E not an E-N-C-Y-C-L-O-P-E-D-I-A. You don't need a book to teach you how to curse others, its the most natural and easiest form of magick there is (thats why, I presume, there are so many 3-Folders out there warning against it. Stuff it, worms). That said I still like it, wide variety of ideas, more fuel to the fire.

I'd take the wager that the first spell ever cast was a curse.

The only real problem I have is Im not sure what the Daemonolatry Warding Symbols are on page 128. I mean she talks about warding...but what are those symbols? One's an Ankh. I must have missed something.

Point blank, if you piss me off or someone I know, especially if you try to scam hassle or mooch, you're getting cursed, by me, and I'll let you know it as I do it. Like Connolly says, it's healthy.

She also alludes to amulets and purification over circle casting... a practice I prefer. Leave the circle casting to the Golden Yawn.

Good book, if you like freedom and going against convention or just doing general study of the Occult, I say get this book. By the way she has a page (104) about the the sigil on the cover, which is more than what alot of authors do (pick cover art that has nothing to do with the contents of the Book).

Excellent general discussion of cursing
By Green Stone
Probably the best book on cursing and hexes I have found.

Perhaps the best aspect of this book is the first 41 pages, where the author discusses the context of cursing: ethics, psychology, history, and "creating your own." This author is wonderfully direct and plain spoken: what she writes so often feels like keen, sharp darts that get right to the point, very effectually, and you can learn a lot here. You'll find the paradox here which is so important a part of earthy common sense, yet is so often lost in our excessively mental culture. For instance, the author begins by stating that she loves the dark arts and loves curses, but uses them quite sparingly. This might surprise those namby-pamby types who are afraid of facing their own shadow and coming to know it, but does reflect the reality of working with the dark parts of oneself and with cursing and hexing magic. Once you come to experience a certain level of power and potency there, you realize that it's enough to tap into that power and work with it: you don't need to often be flinging it at people.

The author discusses the "psychological aspect" of cursing, and refers to the "Lesser Black Magic" of using forms of "manipulation" to effect others and obtain what one wants. The author does not go into a lot of detail here, but this is a subject that I believe is quite valuable and really deserves to be discussed at greater length by someone. It is a very valuable way of working together with Magic to obtain justice, or to free oneself from harassment or malice, which requires a refined understanding of human psychology, a creative mind, and doing some outer works in the external world. To give an example based on something the author says: in the intro to the book, under "The Law", she states that to tell someone you are cursing them could get you charged with a misdemeanor or felony crime. True enough, particularly in our highly litigious society. However, there are ways of making someone sense that they are being cursed, without laying down any path that leads back to you. Enough said. This is just one example of what can be done in addition to Curse Magic itself, to increase your effectiveness in addressing a wrong, or even a criminal situation.

I laughed out loud when I read the author's wonderfully on-point response to the question that many beginner Magicians ask about wanting books on Advanced Magic. "Here's a clue for those particular folks: Advanced Magic = Magic you create yourself that manifests results. If you still need a book to tell you how it's done, you're not an Advanced Magician, period. That is why there are no advanced magic books. Advanced Magicians don't need to do anything by the book because they're advanced enough to create their own magic that manifests results." (pg 35).

There are many aspects of cursing magic that the author doesn't go into, which are addressed well in another book on the subject by Dorothy Morrison, in her "Utterly WIcked" book, one which I strongly recommend. For instance she points out that if you yourself are at fault, the last thing you want to do is a curse on someone else. And she strongly recommends not doing curses for other people.

The actual curse spells given by the author in this book are overall not as interesting to me as those, for instance, given by Dorothy Morrison in her book, possibly because I am oriented to folk magic and HooDoo, and I most enjoy spells that use humor and rhyming couplets, but you can get great ideas here. One of the intriguing things in this book is that the author gives 104 curses found just in the BIblical Psalms alone. For those pollyannas who think that the Bible and spiritual paths issuing from it are opposed to cursing, think again!

From Library Journal
What do you get if you combine the Greek gold treasures of the Hermitage, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art? A blockbuster exhibit of about 200 glittering gold artifacts gathered from Greece, the Crimea, Asia Minor, and most of the Greek colonies of the Mediterranean. In the manner of all good exhibit catalogs, this book has a long introduction giving extensive information on the materials, techniques, craftsmen, functions, forms, iconography, and aesthetics of Greek jewelry. Williams and Ogden provide clear, informative insights into the gold, but their prose has none of the fire of the jewelry they discuss. A good choice for large collections on jewelry, ancient art, or Greece.

From Booklist
Three world-class museums--the British Museum, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and St. Petersburg's State Hermitage--have opened their coffers to showcase close to 200 pieces of ancient jewelry. Samples have been plucked not only from Greece but also from what is now known as Egypt, Cyprus, Sicily, and southern Italy. The authors' scholarship is unobtrusive; in fact, the text provides relatively easy reading for those charmed by objets d'art as well as curators and professional jewelers. Each item is well researched; included are its provenance, approximate date of manufacture, dimensions, a lengthy description, current and original owners, and a bibliography. The color photography is exquisite, resulting in details so fine that readers sense they could almost touch the precious metals. Barbara Jacobs

This book is great. It shows detailed photographs of many pieces, and the text describes the methods of construction. There is a section showing the tools they used to manufacture the jewelry, and the way the tools were used.

A magnificent book that captures the beauty of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum: graceful torques, trembling and delicate tiaras. A lost world of beauty revived.

Sketches from a Hunter's Album: The Complete Edition (Penguin Classics), by Ivan Turgenev

Turgenev's first major prose work is a series of twenty-five Sketches: the observations and anecdotes of the author during his travels through Russia satisfying his passion for hunting. His album is filled with moving insights into the lives of those he encounters - peasants and landowners, doctors and bailiffs, neglected wives and bereft mothers - each providing a glimpse of love, tragedy, courage and loss, and anticipating Turgenev's great later works such as First Love and Fathers and Sons. His depiction of the cruelty and arrogance of the ruling classes was considered subversive and led to his arrest and confinement to his estate, but these sketches opened the minds of contemporary readers to the plight of the peasantry and were even said to have led Tsar Alexander II to abolish serfdom.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Lessons from a Master
By Sanson Corrasco
It's taken me until now to get to Sketches From A Hunter's Album. Now I have finished it and now I am grieving. It will stay in my nonlending collection so I can savor it even after the surprise has gone. It's like losing a friend.
Turgenev calls these 'sketches' rather than stories. It's a good distinction. More story writers should concentrate on their sketch pads. The sketches are of places and people in the rural south of Russia in the 1840s. Each is strung thematically on Turgenev's wandrings through the countryside while hunting for game birds. Each begins with a mention that he was hunting in a certain place. He goes into lovely thoughtful and surprising descriptions of the woods or marsh, the sky, the smells, the sounds, the light. Even in translation, these are exquisite. He speaks of shifting light shining through the leaves onto the forest floor, or unbreatheable noonday heat, or changing skies at the advent of a storm, a dawn, or a sunset; he calls up moments from your own life that you thought could not be shared with anyone who wasn't there and he makes you relive those moments as if he had been there with you.
For anyone who has spent time out of doors, these little Aldo Leopold nature essays standing alone would be reason enough to read the 'Sketches', but these are just hors d'œuvre to his descriptions of the persons he meets while hunting. When sketching people, Turgenev does gracefully what Dickens tried to do and did clumsily; that is, he describes the physical characteristics of a person and gives you a fully formed description of their character as well, and he does this without sounding forced and without showing himself. (And you will burst out laughing at the sudden recognition that, indeed, someone does look 'like a root vegetable'.)
"Sketches" was published twice in Turgenev's lifetime and in the second edition he added to it. In the earlier sketches, Turgenev brings a character to life in a description; the character may speak a few words, and disappear from the scene, as people do in real life, leaving the reader to speculate what became of him. Yet, Turgenev has given us enough insight into the character that we think we know what probably happened next, and so the story is complete. These are elegant Aristotelian constructs with the action taking place offstage, and, oh elegance! with the final action taking place in the reader's imagination after the story has ended. If my description leaves you wondering, read them! (Would that I could spur you to act as Turgenev spurs his readers to think. Ah, but it's too much... .) This is what Turgenev does. He starts you thinking, but requires you to complete the story. In the later sketches Turgenev is just as deft in his descriptions, but perhaps to satisfy the market or his editors he adopts a more plot driven model. These later contributions can more truly be called stories rather than sketches. They are equally well-crafted, but they demand less of the reader. Curiously, they give us less as well.
The hunter's travels theme gives the collection an interrelatedness, almost like a picaresque novel. As in Huckleberry Finn or Don Quixote, neither the author nor the protagonist directly express opinions, but as stories accumulate the reader acquires the author's strong politicized view. We meet the aristocrats and peasants of rural Russia. The serf-holding system had been 'liberalized' in the early 19th century, but it is revealed as the unnamed slavery it was. Landlords control peasants' rights to marry; they name the persons to fill regional conscription quotas; they assign agricultural and residential alotments; and thoughtless and uncaring aristocrats use these powers carelessly or maliciously to destroy lives. Liberal aristocrats fare no better than traditional feudalists, as Turgenev details social reformers' well-meaning disasters which beggar both for the peasants and the bumbling aristocrats who direct them.
America often forgets that its civil war was part of a European pandemic of peasant revolts driven by the extended logic of the Enlightenment. As masters and slaves in the United States were struggling with the immorality of a divine order handed down from a prior age, the masters and servants in Europe did the same. The 1840s, 50s, and 60s were tumultuous times in central and eastern Europe. Turgenev, arrested and exiled in 1852 because of the 'Sketches', has an historical place akin to the American abolitionists of the same day, however, unlike Harriet Beecher Stowe, Turgenev draws his characters in three dimensions with humanity, with love and understanding even when he does not forgive them their moral failings. The 'Sketches' would be an interesting book to teach alongside Huckleberry Finn.

Turgenev, sportsman and ardent liberal
By Doug Anderson
Turgenev effectively invents a new form -- the literary sketch -- to impart a new kind of content. What is brilliant about these sketches which are in part nature meditation and in part biographical sketch is how Turgenev allows each character to speak for themselves. As a result we feel like we are hearing something we have never heard before -- the natural voice of the people. By allowing people to speak for themselves Turgenev gives us a truer and more genuine idea of how people -- serf and gentry -- really think and relate. Each sketch begins with a detailed description of the natural surroundings he is walking through and these descriptions give us insight into Turgenev's cast of mind which is infintely receptive, and discerning, even romantic and delicate at times as when he describes staring up through the forest canopy and imagining he is staring up at the world from beneath a vast body of water. These magnficent introductions set the mood for the character sketch to come. When he meets a serf it is as if he is merely continuing his communion with nature for the serfs live at one with the land. When he meets one of the gentry, however, and passes time in their company he feels removed from the natural settings and people he so values. It is a fascinating and very subtle technique but Turgenev makes the landowners seem like unnatural creatures who are disturbing the natural order. Though he is one of the gentry himself Turgenev hunts with the serfs , he values their company and conversation, and he values what they know. He knows them as individuals not just as serfs and so we too come to know them as individuals, each with their own personality and ideas about life and story to tell. Since we know these sketches are from real life we listen more carefully to them than we would if they were mere inventions; real life has a resonance that fiction does not. Given the choice of spending the day with a either serf or a landowner Turgenev would choose the serf. The serfs have not received an education and their opinions are often shaped by superstition, and yet it is these very superstitions that make them such colorful characters, the gentry may be educated but they are full of self-importance and affectations and see everything through the limited scope of their own self-interest which is merely another form of ignorance. Turgenev's most effective weapon is not bitter invective but irony. He never comes out and says serfdom is bad because the landowners are in some cases such vile creatures that there is no need to. By simply quoting them and describing their manners and actions Turgenev allows the landowners to do a fine job at condemning themselves.
The most profound sketch to my mind is "Yermolay and the Millers Wife" which relates the harsh treatment doled out to a beautiful serf woman merely because she wants to get married, and a close second is "Bezhin Lea" about a group of boys telling ghost stories around a fire as they tend a herd of horses grazing at night. The former sketch pefectly conveys what absolute power the landowners have over every aspect of the serfs life and the latter sketch perfectly conveys how the serfs pass down their own particular brand of wisdom from one generation to the next. Perhaps the most famous sketch however is "Khor and Kalinych" which juxtaposes two kinds of serfs--one resigned to his lot and the other who despite his status as serf finds his own kind of freedom by wandering the countryside. "Kasyan and the Beautiful Lands" is perhaps the most unusual story as it presents a sage-like man who speaks as though he were a living oracle. Deprived of education the serfs remain in thrall not only to the landowners but to ignorance as well; nonetheless there is a beauty and tragic grace in the voices of these serfs that remains in memory long after you have read these sketches. The sketches are complex and layered enough to invite you back to them again and again.
The biggest joy of the sketches is their casualness. Nothing is ever overly stated or stated in black and white but everything nonetheless appears clear as day. It seems at times as if Turgenev is the only enlightened soul in Russia and yet he is absolutely civil even when with a pernicious landowner because he innately knows what is right and he trusts that we know as well. Turgenev reminds me of Thoreau in his devotions which are equally divided between nature and the forwarding of liberal ideas. Though Pushkin and Lermontov both came before him Turgenev was the first Russian writer to achieve fame outside of Russia. Fathers and Sons is considered his masterpiece but these sketches stand as something unique in all of literature.

Cor!
By David Light
In giving this book only three stars, I'm not rating Turgenev but rather the translation. I'm not a translator myself, I'm sure it's very difficult rendering dialogue from another time and place, etc., etc. but I finally couldn't abide the translator's choice in this case to render the voices of nineteenth century Russian peasants in Cockney (or other English) slang.
Examples: "He was a right pain to his peasant girls." "They felt right idiots." "He's not a gent, is he?" "Help us, mate." "Judge for yourself, mate." "He's the soul of kindness, he is." "Gavrila comprehended-like how to get out of the wood." The use of "'cos" for "because." The use of "gotta"--"And I've gotta tell you this."
And what was for me the last straw, in the story Bezhin Lea, "Cor!" and "Cor, stone me!"
If you like this kind of thing, you'll love the book. For Russian lit in translation, give me Constance Garnett (and her Edwardian diction--which works so well, perhaps because it seems natural in contrast to the forced quality on display in "Sketches") or else the current team of Pevear and Volokhonsky.
